Where can you get the most bang for your buck when buying a new house? Real estate website Point2Homes set out to find the answer by looking at the square footage you can get for $300,000 in the 50 largest U.S. cities. Turns out most of Texas is a steal.

Dallas and Houston are right on track with the U.S. median home size (1,700 square feet) at 1,657 and 2,000 square feet, respectively. For even more elbow room, consider Fort Worth, Arlington, and San Antonio, which come in at just under 3,000 square feet.

El Paso offers 3,297 square feet for the same price — the most room in Texas and the fifth largest size on the list. Austin, on the other hand, is the most expensive Texas city. Here, $300,000 will get you only 1,351 square feet.

But that's living large compared to Manhattan and San Francisco, which clock in at only 165 and 352 square feet, respectively. The most bang for your buck? Detroit, where you can spread out in almost 7,000 square feet.
