    This Week in Gluttony

Community Beer's 1st anniversary party tops best food and drink events in Dallas

    Jonathan Rienstra
    Jan 13, 2014 | 4:09 pm

Texas winters are a study in instability. The ice storm of early December and the recent Polar Vortex have given way to downright hospitable conditions perfect for New Year’s resolution-makers to clog up jogging lanes across the city.

Yet we know this won’t last, because in a week or two, it will probably be back down into the 20s and 30s, and people will scramble to the dry cleaners because they got cocky and didn’t bother to get their Merino wool sweaters cleaned during the window of bliss.

Anyway, This Week in Gluttony is quite fond of Community Beer Company, as the brewery takes part in a beer dinner on Friday and then celebrates its one-year anniversary on Saturday. If that’s not your style, there’s another, totally different beer dinner; an underground dinner featuring foods from White Rock Local Market; and a dinner at the Wine Poste via Kent Rathbun. Yes, that’s a lot of dinners.

Take your sweaters to the dry cleaners first, though.

Acclaimed Hofbräu Pub from Germany to make Texas debut in Addison

    Hofbrau Pub, coming to Texas.

A German beer powerhouse is coming to Texas with the debut of the first Hofbräu Pub, opening in the Dallas area, serving Hofbräu beer imported from the storied, centuries-old brewery in Munich.

According to a company spokesperson, the brewpub will open in Addison, exact address TBA, in fall 2026.

“We are excited to bring Bavarian beer culture to a region defined by hospitality, entrepreneurial spirit, and cultural diversity,” says Dr. Jörg Lehmann, director of Staatliches Hofbräuhaus in München, in a statement. “Hofbräuhaus Texas will unite authentic Bavarian heritage with the vibrant character of the American South – a partnership with great promise.”

The Hofbräuhaus in Munich and Hofbräu München Brewery — a combination brewery and beer hall — were founded in 1589, and reign as the most famous beer hall in the world, with beer, German cuisine, and lively entertainment.

Brewed in Munich, after the German Purity Law — using only four ingredients: barley, yeast, hops, and water — Hofbräu Beer is renowned across the world.

    Hofbrau in the U.S.
Hofbräu — which is no relation to the DFW-based Hoffbrau Steakhouse chain — first introduced its beer to the U.S. at the Oktoberfest in Michigan in 1997. The company went on to open its first U.S. Hofbräuhaus brewery and beer garden in Kentucky in 2003, with a goal to share Bavarian lifestyle and beer culture in the most authentic way.

There are currently 10 locations, including Las Vegas, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Columbus, and Buffalo NY, as well as Dubai, China, and Brazil — each dedicated to preserving the historical legacy of the Munich original.

All of the locations currently brew beer onsite according to original Munich recipes, but the Texas location will be a pioneering new, cozier, brewpub-only model, with beer imported from Bavaria.

    Texas location
Bringing the concept to Texas are Dallas entrepreneurs Taylor and Flip Howard, who developed an appreciation for Bavarian culture after living in the Alps during their college years. Taylor advises European companies on U.S. market entry strategies, while Flip is founder and CEO of Lucid Private Offices, which now has 30 locations across the U.S.

The Addison location will follow the Hofbräu Pub format, coming in at 5,000 square feet, while preserving the hallmark elements of a Bavarian beer hall. It will serve Bavarian beers and seasonals imported from the Hofbrau Brewery in Munich, plus a menu of Bavarian food that includes:

    • potato pancakes with smoked salmon
    • their signature crispy pork shank with bread dumpling, potato dumpling, green cabbage bacon salad, and dark beer gravy
    • pretzels with Obatzda cheese and mustard
    • Bavarian-style pork & beef burger on a kaiser roll

Plus Bavarian classics like breaded pork cutlet schnitzel served with potato salad or with spatzle & mushroom sauce; and sauerbraten pot roast with spatzle & red cabbage.

There'll be sausages, best spotlighted on a sampler with a Vienna-style Frankfurter, pork sausage, chicken sausage, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, and onion mustard. Plus apple strudel and black forest cake for dessert, and cocktails and wine in addition to Hofbräu beers.

Addison makes for a fitting location as it's home to the annual Addison Oktoberfest, one of the largest Oktoberfests in Texas. According to Hofbräu's spokesperson, they have a location under contract and will reveal the address at a later date, with an opening set for fall.
