Girl Power
Pat Smith and Robin Roberts inspire women through social media-powered Dallas event
Social media and second chances collided when Treasure You founder Pat Smith and Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts hosted “Celebrating Second Chances for Overcomers” at the Hyatt Regency. WFAA’s Gloria Campos served as emcee.
The event, filled with laughter, tears and surprises, streamed live on Smith’s website. For more than two hours, supporters from as far away as Canada and India participated.
Twitter was trending with the hashtag #TYSC, and Roberts responded to comments and questions from all of the women attending via web. She encouraged the women listening to “make your mess your message.”
Even though the afternoon was all about girl power, proud hubby and NFL Hall-of-Famer Emmitt Smith snapped photos of his wife from his front-row seat and escorted each honoree to and from the stage.
Faye C. Briggs was the first to be honored with the Page’s Angels Award, which Smith established in honor of her mother. Smith also celebrated the everyday woman as locals Marla Avery, LaToya Brown and Amy Munoz were selected from her local Treasure You Overcomers Contest.
The National Overcomers Awards presentation — honoring Cindi Broaddus,Wendy Davis, Sybrina Fulton, Sarah Jakes and Antoinette Tuff — was also a special moment for attendees and online viewers alike.
True to form, Pat Smith had a surprise up her sleeve. Through a video message from gospel-music icon Kirk Franklin, one audience member’s dream came true. Franklin invited Vaniessa Cousins, a single mom with a golden voice who has been battling cancer for a decade, to join him in the studio to record a song together.
In case you missed the event, you can watch the entire two-hour program on Smith's website.
