Dallas coffee shop is crowned the most beautiful in Texas

    Lindsey Wilson
    Jan 25, 2018 | 11:31 am

International design authority Architectural Digest has selected the most beautiful coffee shop in each state, and it's a Dallas location of an Austin brand that takes the crown in Texas.

Houndstooth Coffee at Sylvan | Thirty gets praise for how its "soaring ceiling with an accordion effect and an all-white interior (with pops of heather gray) ... make the floating island — where all java drinks are made — pop."

That's a lot of popping. Dallas-based architecture and interiors studio Official designed the location, which is the second of three in Dallas. The first opened on Henderson Avenue in 2014, and the latest is adjacent to sustainable home improvement store TreeHouse, at Walnut Hill Lane and US-75. Houndstooth was founded in Austin in 2010, where there are now two locations.

To compile its list, Architectural Digest said it was looking for coffee shops that perfectly reflect the character of their surrounding communities, and noted that many are "tapping into design trends with salvaged barn wood, ball-pendant lights, greenery, and hexagonal tiles. That fresh, modern white-wall look is in abundance, too, putting yesterday’s run-of-the-mill cafes with mismatched furnishings and dark colors to shame."

The Sylvan | Thirty Houndstooth is indeed fresh, modern, and mostly white, with finishing materials that are a combination of white oak, walnut, Spanish cedar, raw and painted steel, perforated steel, and quartz. It was a 2016 AIA Dallas Built Design Honor Award recipient. The group at Official notes that the space was built for a 360-degree experience and to maximize interactions between guests and the barista.

However, Architectural Digest doesn't mention Houndstooth's adjoining cocktail bar, Jettison, which patrons can reach through a corridor with sliding doors when they're ready to move on to the hard stuff. Also designed by Official, Jettison has darker finishes but retains the same gold accents as Houndstooth, in order to tie the two spaces together.

One of Dallas’ most popular spring fundraising "shopportunities" is back for a milestone 15th year: Dwell with Dignity will present the The Studio (formerly Thrift Studio), a month-long pop-up filled with high-end home décor at deep discounts, April 10-May 9.

Now a decade-and-a-half old, The Studio - located in the Design District - features fully designer-styled, shoppable room vignettes by top designers, offering a unique chance to buy designer pieces straight off the floor.

All proceeds go to Dwell with Dignity, which provides and installs interiors for individuals experiencing poverty and homelessness across greater North Texas. Since its inception, Dwell with Dignity has completed more than 285 home design projects and 55 community spaces, and in 2025 the organization served more than 3,000 people through its home and community projects.

The Studio generates about one-third of the organization’s annual operating revenue.

Shoppers will find furniture, artwork, housewares, and accessories - all donated or specially sourced - with 100 percent of proceeds going back to the nonprofit.

The 2026 event is chaired by Jean Liu, Jean Liu Design, with Art Chair Kendall Bardin, and the designer lineup includes:

    • Ashleigh Graber Design
    • Graham + Co Interiors | Sarah Graham
    • Living Luxury Lab by MxD Interiors
    • Roco and Xander by Amara Home Designs
    • Studio 11 Design
    • Studio Thomas James
    • Yates Desygn

“The Studio is our flagship fundraiser and a critical driver of our mission to transform lives through design,” says Teresa Charnock, executive director of Dwell with Dignity, in a release. “Dwell with Dignity provides families with renovated fully furnished home interiors that give stability, support and comfort to empower them to lead their best lives in a beautiful environment. When someone shops at The Studio, they are directly supporting that work."

Returning as presenting sponsor, Amazon has helped the event generate more than $1.5 million in merchandise sales, supporting home transformations for 72 families and redesigning 21 community spaces.

The 2026 event begins with a ticketed VIP Premiere Party on April 9, followed by free public shopping from April 10-May 9 at its Dallas Design District location, 1833 E. Levee St., Dallas.

The VIP Premiere Party will take place April 9 from 6-9 pm, with tickets ranging from $200-$350.

The Studio pop-up will be open 10 am-5 pm Tuesday-Saturday, April 10-May 9 with free admission.
