    Tequila Party

Herradura shows Dallas enthusiasts how to properly appreciate tequila

    Jennifer Chininis
    Feb 18, 2015 | 11:33 am

We Texans love our margaritas, but there is so much more to drinking — and appreciating — tequila. Tuesday night, Casa Herradura Global Tequila Ambassador Ruben Aceves welcomed about 150 Dallas drinking enthusiasts to a Tequila Appreciation Society Social at 3015 at Trinity Groves, where he led a fun and informative discussion about the finer points of this Mexican elixir.

To get the party started, bartenders shook up margaritas (2 oz. Herradura silver tequila, 1 oz. Cointreau, 3/4 oz. lime juice, 1/2 oz. agave nectar) for guests while they noshed on chicken tostadas, pulled pork tostones, Southwestern shrimp ceviche, Mexican corn shooters, and chorizo and poblano empanadas. Once settled into their seats — and instructed to save those glasses of tequila for later – Aceves launched into his presentation, which began with a story about the alcohol's origins.

A proper education is nothing without a demonstration, so Aceves brought along a skilled jimador, who, much to the delight of onlookers, hacked into an agave plant before their very eyes to show them how the harvesting is done. Then Aceves invited them up to check out the flesh of the plant for themselves before sending them back to their seats, where three varieties of tequila awaited for tasting: silver, reposado and añejo.

Everyone started with the silver before moving onto the reposado, a category Herradura created in 1974. The tasting ended with the añejo, aged 25 months, with notes of chocolate, banana and spice. As the most complex of the three, Aceves noted it was an excellent after-dinner sipping tequila.

As the tasting wrapped up, and Aceves answered guests' burning questions, servers came around again with sweet bites from the 3015 kitchen, including churros and Mexican chocolate brownies. The best part about this class — aside from the fact that everyone got to drink during it — is that all ticket proceeds benefited Cafe Momentum.

About 150 Dallas drinkers came to the Herradura tequila tasting.

Gloria's new Plano location serves the dishes and margaritas fans know and love.

One door has closed and another has opened for popular Salvadoran and Tex-Mex chain Gloria’s Latin Cuisine. The restaurant has moved from its longtime Frisco location, and into a newly built Plano outpost just one mile away.

New address to plug into GPS: 8601 Preston Rd., on the southwest corner of Preston Road and State Highway 121.

The new restaurant is now open, serving the signature black bean dip, pupusas, and margaritas Gloria's fans know and love.

According to a release, the new, 8500-square-foot Plano restaurant features vibrant Latin-inspired décor and colors, indoor-outdoor patio dining with full climate control, an upscale bar, a striking Caralarga tapestry, and handcrafted pottery from Mexico.

“Our Frisco location has been such a meaningful part of our family since 2001,” says Founder Gloria Fuentes in the release. “We’re incredibly grateful for the loyalty and memories shared with the Frisco community over the years. This move allows us to continue serving our guests in a beautiful new space, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone into our new home in Plano with the same hospitality they’ve always known.”

The year 2026 marks Gloria's milestone 40th anniversary. Gloria’s Latin Cuisine was founded in 1986 by Gloria and Jose Fuentes, born out of the traditions of El Salvador, with their original location in Oak Cliff on West Davis Street before relocating to a former firehouse they renovated in 2011.

They currently have 23 locations across Texas including Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, Houston, and San Antonio.

“Our goal has always been to create a place where people feel at home,” says co-founder Jose Fuentes in the release. “The new Plano location brings together the flavors of El Salvador and the warmth of Texas hospitality. It is a place to gather, slow down, share a meal made with love and celebrate together.”

Gloria’s Latin Cuisine in Plano is open Sunday-Thursday from 11 am-9 pm, and Friday-Saturday from 11 am-10:30 pm.
