    This Week's Hot Headlines

Popular Dallas tea room's closure tops this week's 5 hottest headlines

    Stephanie Allmon Merry
    May 26, 2018 | 10:00 am

Editor's note: A lot happened this week, so here's your chance to get caught up. Read on for the week's most popular headlines.

    1. Prime Dallas ladies-who-lunch tea room to close after 18 years. In what feels like somewhat inevitable news, Forty Five Ten, the Dallas-based luxury boutique, is closing the T Room at Forty Five Ten on McKinney Avenue. According to a release, the closure comes as "part of a strategic decision" by the Headington Companies who own it, to refocus on the flagship Forty Five Ten location in downtown Dallas.

    2. Most famous Dallas real estate firm sold to Warren Buffett. Ebby Halliday Realtors will be acquired by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices of America, the Dallas-based real estate firm announced May 21. HomeServices CEO Ron Peltier delivered the news to 1,700 agents at a meeting inside The Star in Frisco and assured them that nothing would change — except that their parent now was a rich guy named Warren Buffett.

    3. Chef Nick Badovinus to open not one but two concepts in downtown Dallas. The new restaurant in downtown Dallas in the works from sprightly chef Nick Badovinus (Town Hearth, Neighborhood Services, Montlake Cut, Offsite Kitchen) has a name, and a little sibling. Called National Anthem, the restaurant will open in the triangular Magnolia Oil building as part of a new district being formed on the eastern edge of downtown Dallas.

    4. Rents could increase this much if Amazon HQ2 picks Dallas, new study says. A new study shows the price Dallas or Austin could pay if Amazon picks either Texas city for its second headquarters. Data and analytics provider CoStar Group forecasts both cities will see a 10-year rise in apartment rents if either lands Amazon’s so-called HQ2 project — but Austin rents would increase more than those in Dallas.

    5. The best Dallas-Fort Worth outdoor concerts for families in summer 2018. Even with the temperatures rising, plenty of venues in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will present outdoor concert series this spring and summer. These seasonal outings make for fun family picnics, great friend-gatherings, and romantic date nights under the stars. Here are the best places to listen to music in the great outdoors this summer.

Apartments will likely see a rise in rent if Dallas lands HQ2.

Dallas record store owner and DJ suffers catastrophic injury in fall

The Dallas music community is rallying around a local figure who's been hurt in a serious accident: Chris Penn, a DJ and co-founder of music store Good Records, fell while at work and sustained serious damage, causing paralysis from the neck down.

According to a post from musician Tim DeLaughter, founder of Polyphonic Spree and co-founder of Good Records, Penn was taking down advertising decals on the store's front window on Monday March 17 when the decal unexpectedly gave way and he fell backwards landing directly on his back.

DeLaughter described the fall as "catastrophic," stating that "his spinal cord was bruised and paralysis was immediate from the neck down."

"It's going to be a long road ahead with many challenges along the way, and we're just getting started," DeLaughter said.

Penn has been in the Intensive Care Unit ever since and is being monitored around the clock. Their current focus is on getting his intubation tube removed so that he can start the journey of breathing without assistance — "that's the first step of many to come," DeLaughter said.

No visitors are allowed but they've started a GoFundMe for Chris, his wife Jennifer, and their three sons Oliver, Archie, and Grover that has already amassed more than $6,000 in donations.

There is also a link for a MealTrain for those who prefer to make donations of food.

"Please send your prayers and positive thoughts towards Chris and his family as we navigate his road to recovery," DeLaughter said. "I know. It's a lot to take in….As you can imagine, the world stopped and from that moment on it has been about Chris and what his future will look like."

DeLaughter also said that one of the first things Penn discussed — via nodding his head at letters until a word was spelled — was "order" — as in order Charlie Crockett Records for an in-store appearance this weekend.

"That pretty much sums him up, so be sure to show up for that in-store tomorrow. We’ve got some records to sell," DeLaughter said.
