    Smoking Hot Cigars

Classy cigar lounge and store to open in Frisco

North Texans, ready your lighters. Frisco is getting a swanky cigar lounge. Industrial Cigar Co. will open in early August with 3,000 square feet of lounge and retail space, and more than 450 different cigars.

“We want this to be a true experience. We want it to be a great lounge where people want to spend time — and we happen to sell premium cigars,” owner Brandon Frakes says.

Like the name suggests, the aesthetic of the lounge at 9500 North Dallas Pkwy. will be rustic and industrial, featuring vintage lock spin doors made to look like an old factory.

Industrial Cigar Co.’s logo features a hexagon, representing the six people who founded the concept. The Frakes family of Brandon, Nathan, Andrew, Dave, Ale, and Beglije used their varying talents in the cigar industry, business, branding, design, and more to formulate the store’s concept.

Though the business model is based on membership, the retail portion of the lounge is open to the public. A small meeting room is also available for members.

“It is a public lounge that has areas for everyone, but members are our driving factors,” Frakes says.

The non-smoking retail area will sell more than 40 cigar brands, including many that are not sold elsewhere in the area. The Frakes family wanted the retail space to be inviting to those who were picking up a gift and not necessarily fond of cigar smoke.

Public members will have access to lockers and the public lounge, as well as many events and programs. Public memberships are $59 per month.

Private members are approved by a committee, much like a prestigious country club. After approval, private members have access to a separate lounge through a biometric scanner. The private lounge comes with an increased level of service, meaning members can call ahead and have their favorite cigar and drink waiting on them upon arrival. Private memberships are $249 a month.

Corporate memberships are available for $600 per month.

“Industrial Cigar Co. offers really hands-on service that puts hospitality first. That hospitality type of feeling is seen in both public and private memberships, and to non-members,” Frakes says.

The lounge has teamed up with a couple brands and will be the first Crux Cigar Company lounge in the nation.

Industrial Cigar Co. has also paid close attention to its air-filtering system. Honeywell air filters will recycle fresh air into the lounge every six minutes, meaning you won’t leave smelling like an ash tray.

Until the space opens, Industrial Cigar Co. is holding Hard Hat Smoking Tours every Wednesday at 7 pm.

The aesthetic is rustic and industrial, right down to the vintage lock spin doors made to look like an old factory.

The Dallas City Council approved a lease with the University of North Texas Dallas campus for a proposed Dallas Police Training Academy. The lease paves the way for the development of a new Law Enforcement Training Center and Criminal Justice Center on a 20-acre site at UNT-Dallas, part of the City’s efforts to modernize police training and deepen academic partnerships.

The new facility, which was first proposed in 2021, will house the Dallas Police Department’s Basic and In-Service Training Academy, along with a Criminal Justice Center, creating a centralized, state-of-the-art campus for officer development.

Training spaces will include modern classrooms, indoor simulation labs, and areas for defensive tactics instruction.

“This partnership reflects our commitment to preparing officers through modern, state of the art, community-connected training,” said Dominique Artis, Dallas Chief of Public Safety. “The combination of a police academy and Criminal Justice Center at a university campus enhances recruitment, education, and public trust.”

Benefits of the Law Enforcement Training Center and Criminal Justice Center include

    • Academic Partnership: Collaboration with UNT-Dallas opens doors for research, continuing education, and career pathways for both officers and students alike - creating a pipeline to future cadets and expanding opportunities for local talent
    • .Modern Training Facilities: The campus will feature simulation environments, flexible classroom space, and the latest instructional technology.
    • Strategic Location: As the first police training academy in southern Dallas, the project brings long-term public investment to the area.
    • Dual-Campus Model: This site complements a planned Public Safety Complex elsewhere in Dallas that will serve as a field training location for both DPD and Dallas Fire-Rescue.

According to KERA, the training academy is estimated to cost $185 million, plus $90 million for the public safety complex, for a total of $275 million. There is currently $96.5 million committed including $50 million from the 2024 Bond Program passed by the voters in May 2024, along with state grants, money from the Caruth Fund at Communities Foundation of Texas, and private fundraising commitments. Construction is expected to begin in 2026.
