Long-awaited luxury hotel za-za-zooms into downtown Austin with rooftop bar

    Katie Friel
    Sep 13, 2019 | 4:47 pm

Okay, so it might have missed that original 2015 deadline, but Hotel ZaZa is finally opening its doors in Austin. The opulent hotelier, which also has locations in Dallas and Houston, announced it finally has checked into the Capital City.

Located just steps from Republic Square Park at 400 Lavaca St., the 159-room ZaZa offers a restaurant, craft cocktail bar, rooftop pool and bar, live entertainment stage, decadent spa, and more than 8,000 square feet of meeting space spread across six separate venues.

"Hotel ZaZa Austin marries big city sophistication with authentic Texas style to create the city’s preeminent luxury hotel," the hotel teases in a release.

Cultivating that big city sophistication/authentic Texas style is Dallas-based Duncan Miller Ullmann, who also designed ZaZa's outposts in Houston and the Big D. In addition to the standard queen and king rooms, the firm was tasked with creating individually themed suites, such as a Palm Spring-inspired Bungalow 6 and the opulent rock ‘n’ roll-themed Back Stage Pass King Suite.

Suite or no suite, every guest is treated to C.O. Bigelow bath products and the hotel's signature candle-lit turndown service.

Austin chef Jacob Weaver, best known for stints at Juliet Italian Kitchen and Asti, is leading the hotel's restaurant program. The property's ground-floor restaurant, Perfect Strangers, offers cocktails; light bites; and a contemporary menu of salads and soups, sandwiches, and entrées, and is open to guests and locals alike.

The seventh floor cocktail bar, the aptly named Group Therapy, is also home to the hotel's live music venue, Stage Fright. (Kudos for these names, ZaZa.) Adjacent to Group Therapy is the poolside Cabana Bar. Speaking of which, the luxury pool boasts views of both the city skyline and Republic Square Park.

Rates for the newly opened Hotel ZaZa Austin begin at $289, and reservations can be made here.

The hotel's pool overlooks downtown Austin.

American Airlines predicts back-to-normal travel following shutdown

American Airlines is ready to get customers to the Thanksgiving table: According to a release, the Fort Worth-based carrier is looking forward to moving past the industrywide flight disruptions caused by the government shutdown and is in full recovery mode.

“The Thanksgiving holiday period is one of the most condensed and most important for our customers — the stakes are high, and the American team is ready to deliver,” said American COO David Seymour in a statement. “Customers making last-minute holiday plans — and those who booked months ago — can rest assured that our operation will run smoothly and safely."

Seymour also expressed thanks to everyone who worked hard to get through several difficult weeks — "especially our team members and federal aviation workers," he said.

With the termination of the FAA's flight reduction order, customers can expect all flights to operate as scheduled. The airline expects this streak of strong operational performance to continue into the Thanksgiving travel period, with nearly 81,000 flights scheduled for American and its partners during this period, which runs from November 20 through December 2.

    American’s 2025 Thanksgiving operation
Data and statistic on the upcoming travel holiday include:

    • Larger schedule: American and its regional partners will operate 80,759 scheduled flights this Thanksgiving travel period, larger than 2024 and the biggest schedule of any airline worldwide.
    • Peak travel days: Sunday, November 30 will be the most traveled day, followed by Monday, December 1.
    • Extra capacity: Special late-night flights have been added at Phoenix (PHX) and Chicago (ORD) on November 30.
    • Peak operations: On December 1 at 11:10 am Dallas time, 1,077 mainline and regional aircraft will be enroute — the highest number during the travel period.
