Spring break sweethearts dance the night away at high-energy Dallas wedding

Nicole Jordan
Sep 14, 2018 | 10:05 am

Ann Marie Hickey and Blake Waltrip met on a trip to the Dominican Republic during their senior year of high school — and while neither imagined their spring fling would set the groundwork for wedding bells, that was precisely the case.

On February 24, 2018, Hickey and Waltrip tied the knot with a traditional church wedding followed by a very modern, very raucous reception.

“My main priority was to make sure all my guests had a good time,” says Hickey. “I just wanted everyone on the dance floor the whole night, so we had a large dance floor with fun dance-floor favors and rubber flip-flops for guest to change into when their feet started to hurt.”

It couldn’t have been more apropos for the couple, who had danced the night away at the “Disco Teca” the first night they met. Following a weeklong spring break fling, the would-be Mr. and Mrs. returned to their respective homes in Dallas and Fort Worth but never strayed far from each other’s minds.

Time and time again, Waltrip made the trek to Dallas to take Hickey out, and when the time came to go away to college, the couple both ended up at The University of Texas and began dating in earnest.

Five years later, Waltrip invited Hickey to celebrate his birthday with family and friends at his family ranch in Weatherford and gave her the surprise of her life by dropping to one knee and asking her to marry him.

“I was shocked!” says Hickey. “It was the biggest surprise. Our families came out the house, where they had been watching, and we had the whole night to celebrate. It was truly the best weekend. I was on cloud nine the entire time.”

When the time came to plan the big day, Waltrip and Hickey sought to re-create the element of fun their relationship was built on. Seeking a classic aesthetic with a modern twist, Hickey opted for a traditional ceremony at Park Cities Presbyterian Church followed by a fun-filled evening at Dallas Country Club.

Elegant white floral arrangements with hints of blush (tying into the bridesmaid dresses) adorned the space and a stunning tiered cake featuring cascading flowers acted as a centerpiece. But the highlight, by far, was the large dance floor brimming with family and friends. TOP provided live music while guest showed off their moves — even participating in a flash mob.

When the night came to a close, Hickey gave Waltrip the surprise of his life by bringing in DJ Adante Mayo to end the party with a bang.

“My very favorite part of the wedding was surprising Blake at the end of the night with an extra hour of music,” says Hickey. “He absolutely loves a DJ and was totally surprised."

WHAT: New Friends New Life 2026 Stand for Her Luncheon

WHERE: Hyatt Regency Dallas

THE 411: More than 1,150 community leaders, advocates, and supporters gathered September 24 for one of Dallas' most beloved fall luncheons, New Friends New Life's biggest annual benefit in support of their mission to assist women and girls who have experienced human trafficking and exploitation.

The event was co-chaired by two dynamic mother-daughter duos: Beth Thoele and Brooke Russo and Kathy Helm and Marci Kramer. Lottye and Bobby Lyle served as honorary chairs.

The sold-out luncheon opened with “I Stand for Her,” an original song written by Myshel Wilkins and her team for New Friends New Life that will become the organization’s anthem.

The luncheon co-chairs welcomed guests and underscored the nonprofit's critical mission to help women in the community.

The 2026 ProtectHER Awards honored Elizabeth Carlock Phillips, Janet Jensen, and representatives of Baker Botts and the Toyota Motor North America Pro Bono Legal Clinic for their advocacy and support of survivors.

New Friends New Life's CEO Bianca Davis highlighted New Friends New Life’s 28 years of providing comprehensive services including safe housing, counseling, education, legal assistance, and basic needs support.

Then came the headliner: Award-winning actress Tracee Ellis Ross, who joined NBC 5’s Laura Harris for a candid, funny, and often moving conversation about finding your voice, trusting your instincts, and having agency over your own happiness, safety, and choices.

Ross connected New Friends New Life’s mission to her own experiences, recalling how she learned to listen to her intuition rather than minimize it and how, growing up, she often felt pressure to “change the temperature” in a room. A pediatrician once described her as “a big ball of fire” and advised her mother (legendary singer Diana Ross) to make sure that fire went in the right direction — advice Ross clearly carried with her.

She also reflected on her work in Girlfriends and Black-ish, where she pushed for women to have identities beyond their relationships, and on her Broadway experience in Every Brilliant Thing, which reinforced her belief that “when we do it together, we can flourish.” Her advice to the room was simple: “Your main job is to be kind.”

Discussing Solo Traveling with Tracee Ellis Ross and her travels in Morocco, Ross said she is inspired by women who “create something, lead it, own it, and benefit from it.”

Ross spoke poignantly about healing and rebuilding trust, telling women who have experienced trauma, “you can be scared. It’s okay.” She imagined New Friends New Life’s work as creating the space for survivors to feel safe enough to trust again: “You have to sit and hold that space with someone until they know they are safe enough to trust.”

She also made clear that the work belongs to men, too, encouraging them to pay attention, ask questions, and act when something does not seem right. Her closing words summed up the afternoon: “I stand for her AND with her.”

The inspiring luncheon raised nearly $900,000 to support New Friends New Life in assisting trafficked and sexually exploited teen girls, women and their children, and raising awareness of the issue.
