    Get Crafty

These Dallas homes make it easy to work your favorite craft like a pro

When the holiday season comes into view, we tend to turn up the creativity with arts and crafts projects: completing a gorgeous holiday wreath, building festive centerpieces or creating window displays that showcase a wintery scene. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a room in the house dedicated to storing craft supplies so all of the glue guns and fabric have a home?

Dave Perry-Miller & Associates present three gorgeous estates with impressive craft rooms tailor-made for organized creativity.

The French-influenced estate at 5800 Armstrong Pkwy. features a galley-style craft room with wall-to-wall bin storage to keep everything from buttons to brushes in working order. The checkered flooring provides a whimsical touch too. This five-bedroom Park Cities home features high-end finishes throughout and includes a chef’s kitchen with soapstone countertops, an outdoor wood-burning pizza oven, a second-floor lounge, hand-pillowed limestone walls in the sunroom, an elevator, an art gallery and even an exterior apartment.

The six-bedroom estate at 5037 Radbrook Place offers a craft room with floor-to-ceiling shelving and hanging rods. Built for the serious crafter, the room also has an island with storage cabinets. This Spanish-inspired property sits on a treed 1-acre lot and has four living areas, two dining areas, a media room and an exercise room. Outdoors, you’ll find a pool and a cabana.

4013 Southwestern Blvd. is a five-bedroom traditional estate with an all-white craft room neatly tucked behind the mudroom. Crafting is easy to accomplish here because the large room offers plenty of counter and cabinet space and natural light. This home also features high-end finishes such as 5-inch oak herringbone-pattern plank hardwoods, Calcutta marble tiling, onyx countertops and custom lighting.

    Design For All

Dallas nonprofits can land $20K in free design from acclaimed Texas firm

For the first time, a leading Austin-based architecture office is offering pro-bono services to nonprofits in the Dallas area: Michael Hsu Office of Architecture (MHOA) has launched its fifth annual Design for All initiative with applications open through May 15.

MHOA is looking for a registered 501(c)(3) located within 50 miles Austin, Houston, and for the first time, Dallas-Fort Worth. The nonprofit chosen will receive a grant covering $20,000 of design services; that might include things like a site analysis, a preliminary floor plan, or a proposal for a work plan, according to a press release.

MHOA's work is well known, especially among Austin's restaurant scene. The firm has worked on Uchi's restaurant portfolio, along with visually striking buildings belonging to Loro, Uptown Sports Club, P. Terry's, and more.

The goal of the Design for All Initiative is to help local nonprofits deliver more fully on their community work by giving them more functional spaces to work from.

“Working on Design For All projects reminds us why we became designers,” says MHOA senior associate Chet Morgan in the release. “This work serves as a reminder that thoughtful collaboration can unlock new possibilities long before construction begins.”

Last year's recipient was American YouthWorks, which used its grant to update its existing space, which it had "outgrown," according to a release at the time. Other past recipients include Central Texas Table of Grace (2024), Abigail E. Keller Foundation (2024), The Women’s Home and Children’s Assessment Center (2023), and Austin Angels (2022).

“Design For All has become one of the most meaningful ways we connect our work to the communities we care about,” says MHOA founder and principle Michael Hsu. “With our first Design For All project for Austin Angels completing construction this year, we’re especially proud of how the program continues to grow. As we prepare to open applications for this year’s program, we’re excited to meet the next nonprofit that’s prepared to imagine great possibilities with the support of design.”

Interested nonprofits can submit applications through Google Forms.

MHOA offers the following timeline for the process going forward:

    • Call for Entries – March 10
    • Questions due – April 10
    • Q&A posted on website – April 24
    • Submission Deadline – May 15 at 5 p.m. CT
    • Shortlist Interviews – June 8-19
    • Partnership announced – June 26

More information about the Design for All initiative, including more specific eligibility requirements, is available at hsuoffice.com.
