    Ship ahoy

Top Chef Seattle cruises to Alaska, but no one rocks the boat

    Teresa Gubbins
    Jan 31, 2013 | 9:34 am

With only another episode or two until the finale, Top Chef Seattle is in cruising mode. This week's episode is on a cruise — to Alaska. "Alaska, here we come," says one contestant.

Which contestant, we cannot say, which is unsettling, since only five contestants remain. But there's something weirdly forgettable about this week's show. Maybe that's what happens when you're on a large cruise liner. What happens on the liner stays on the liner.

The other reason the episode might be forgettable is because it's on a large cruise liner. Oh wait, we said that already. No, the other reason is because they keep repeating things. In the show's first 10 minutes, there are two rounds of nostalgia ("What was your most memorable moment?" asks Sheldon, about a series that hasn't even finished yet), two rounds of drinks, and four identical admissions that "I've never been on a cruise before." That's a lot of déjà vu.

By now, even fellow contestant Stefan is fatigued by Josh's bacon shtick. "He does bacon every time," Stefan says scornfully.

The theme of the quickfire is iceberg lettuce. Iceberg, Alaska — get it? Nobody has much good to say about iceberg lettuce, especially Dallas chef Josh Valentine, because iceberg lettuce is not bacon. Worry not. He finds a way to incorporate bacon. But, by now, even fellow contestant Stefan is fatigued by Josh's bacon shtick. "He does bacon every time," Stefan says scornfully.

The elimination theme is "surf and turf," which the contestants must reimagine. Not just imagine, but RE-imagine. Sheldon chooses unimagined steak and lobster as his "proteins," but everyone else picks more exotic stuff: pork belly, bacon, a whole pig. Come to think of it, that doesn't sound so exotic. Compared to all that pork, Brooke's frog legs and mussels sound re-re-re-imagined, and she wins (despite the fact that frog = amphibian).

Josh barely squeaks it out. He flubs his reimagined effort to transform scallops into pasta, then re-imagines scrambled eggs with scallops mixed in. The Gerbers-soft texture proves a pleasant pabulum for the babyish judges. They must have dental issues because Stefan's extra-crisp pork belly hurts their teeth. Wah. Off he goes.

But no pity for Stefan, because he kisses all of the remaining contestants goodbye, some on the lips, some twice. It's enough to make the prospect of seeing Josh's waxed mustache for another episode tolerable.

Top Chef Seattle contestant Stefan likes his pork belly super, super crispy.

A new tour centered on the iconic Harry Potter is coming to town: Harry Potter: The Exhibition — a U.S. tour from Warner Bros. Discovery Global Experiences, Imagine, and Eventim Live — will make its next stop in Dallas debuting at Pepper Square on October 24, 2025.

The tour will replace Titanic: The Exhibition, a similarly immersive, interactive tour that has been in residence at Pepper Square in a former Steinmart at 14902 Preston Rd., since February 14 and will be departing on September 1.

Tickets for Harry Potter will go on sale Wednesday, September 10, but you can join a waitlist to get early access to tickets with a presale offered beginning Tuesday, September 9.

The behind-the-scenes exhibition celebrates iconic moments, characters, settings, and beasts as seen in the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts film series, as well as wonders from the extended world of Harry Potter, which includes the Broadway production Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Guests can get an up-close look at original costumes and authentic props while taking a journey through magical galleries using what the release describes as best-in-class immersive design and technology.

"This exhibition celebrates the extended world of Harry Potter like no other touring exhibition has done before,” says Imagine president and CEO Tom Zaller, who also gives DFW a special shout-out: “With its family-friendly environment and great appreciation for storytelling and adventure, North Texas is the perfect place for fans and families of all ages to experience the magic of the wizarding world."

Since its world premiere in Philadelphia in February 2022, Harry Potter: The Exhibition has captivated more than 4 million fans and visitors worldwide. The exhibition has traveled to major cities around the globe and is currently on display in Salt Lake City; Krakow, Poland; Melbourne, Australia, and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

    Exhibition Highlights
From Page to Screen Gallery showcases a first edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone encased in a Gringotts-inspired vault and is surrounded by inspirational video and literary quotes, reconnecting guests to the story as they are introduced to the exhibition.

Hogwarts Castle Gallery features an immersive multimedia experience with iconic elements like the Whomping Willow, Dementors, and the Marauder’s Map, where guests will see their name appear, prompting them to continue their exploration of the exhibition.
The Great Hall Gallery is a space that allows visitors to celebrate magical seasonal moments in its iconic architecture.

The Hogwarts Houses gallery sets the foundation for the exhibition experience, allowing guests the opportunity to experience more personalized moments with the Hogwarts house they select during their pre-registration. While guests may gravitate towards one house, this gallery will enable visitors to experience all the Hogwarts houses in a celebratory hall featuring the iconic Sorting Hat, perfect for photo ops, while surrounded by freshly designed house crests on meticulously created stained glass windows.

Hogwarts Classrooms are filled with iconic props, creatures, and costumes. Visitors will interact with magical lessons and games through digital touchscreens to reveal behind-the-scenes secrets about iconic classroom moments. They will brew potions in the Potions Classroom, predict the future in Divination, pot a mandrake in the Herbology Greenhouse, and use their digital wand to defeat a boggart in Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Hagrid’s Hut and The Forbidden Forest offer an interactive Patronus charm experience. Guests will then uncover iconic creatures, such as centaurs and Acromantula, hidden in the forest and explore inside a recreation of Hagrid’s Hut.

A collection of Harry Potter: The Exhibition merchandise will be available in the onsite retail shop including apparel, jewelry, and edible treats, including Chocolate Frogs and bottled and draft Butterbeer. There will also be merchandise not available at any other Harry Potter experience.
