Craft beers, underground dinners and goats: The best food and booze events in Dallas this week

    Jonathan Rienstra
    Jan 15, 2013 | 12:00 am

It's a big week for beer here in Dallas. First, one of the most well-known breweries from Colorado, Avery Brewing Company, is making back-to-back appearances — at a dinner at Common Table, followed by a tapping at Goodfriend. Then, Graham Dodds is pairing beers from Real Ale Brewing with goat-centric dishes at Central 214.

Finally, Community Beer Company, in the Dallas Design District, aims to jump into the organized chaos that has become the Dallas craft beer scene with tappings all week and tours this weekend.

Oh, there are some food events going on too, but when was the last time you got drunk on food?

    Tuesday, January 15

Avery Brewing Company Dinner at Common Table
Common Table welcomes Avery Brewing Company brewmaster and founder Adam Avery for a four-course beer dinner starting at 7 pm. The meal features two Avery beers per course to pair with dishes such as blackened shrimp bisque, chilled lobster shooter with citrus tarragon vinaigrette, and warm lobster shooter with Parmesan-chive cream. Cost is $80 per person. Email corey@thecommontable.com for reservations.

Hey, if you can’t make it to the dinner, Goodfriend is hosting Avery on Wednesday at 8 pm, for a tapping of three beers in its Avery Dictator Series.

    Wednesday, January 16

“Fresh is Fabulous — New Year New You” Class at Duo
At this two-hour cooking class starting at 6:30 pm, Yolanda Banks teaches students how to prepare a resolution-style meal of kale salad with pomegranates and candied walnuts, miso mahi mahi, sweet potato purée, and crispy shiitakes. Tickets are $65. To reserve a spot, call 214-884-2979.

Celiac and Gluten Sensitivity Seminar at Le Creuset at Watters Creek
Nutritionist Christine Moore is joining chef Gail Blair of Food Revelation for this free cooking class on Celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. During the two-hour session that starts at 7 pm, Moore and Blair show you how to prepare tangy Texas caviar and coconut macaroon cookie dough truffles. Also expect wine pairings. To RSVP, call 214-770-1925.

    Thursday, January 17

Goat & Beer Dinner at Central 214
Chef Graham Dodds pairs Windy Hill Organics goat and Real Ale Brewing beer for this six-course dinner. For $70, enjoy combos like Lost Gold IPA and fennel-crusted goat tenderloin or Brewhouse Brown with slow-cooked goat shank and butternut squash polenta. For reservations, call 214-443-9339 or visit Central214.com.

    Underground Dinner by Chef DAT
Chef DAT is hosting an underground dinner in Dallas before he leaves for Sundance Film Festival and Mardi Gras. The $85 dinner begins with Champagne and conversation at 7 pm, at a location known only to guests who RSVP. Dishes include smoked duck, andouille and tasso gumbo; smoked salmon and salmon caviar on petite greens; DAT shrimp and grits; and braised Colorado elk. To reserve a spot, email dat@chefdat.com.

    Sunday, January 20

    Community Beer Company Opening Tour
Community Beer Company goes live Wednesday and will do its first tapping the same day at Meddlesome Moth, followed by tappings at Common Table on Thursday and Craft & Growler on Friday. The Saturday tour of the Design District brewery is sold out, but there are still tickets for $10 for the Sunday tour, from 2-5 pm.

Chef DAT is cooking up a Louisiana-style underground dinner January 17. You don't know where until you RSVP.

One of Dallas' top gelato shops opens new location in Plano

There's an authentic new gelato shop now open in Plano: Botolino Gelato, the artisan gelateria founded in Dallas in 2017, has opened a location in the Preston Park Shopping Center, at the northwest corner of Preston Road and Park Boulevard, in a former Starbucks where it opened on May 12.

This is the fourth location for the chain, following the original on 2116 Greenville Ave., Preston & Royal in North Dallas, and Bishop Arts. The company also has Botolino Gelato Lab, a facility near Fair Park where many of their offerings are made.

In a release, owner Carlo Gattini says that fans have been asking for a location in Collin County; his wife is also from Plano and has ties to the community.

Gattini, who trained at Carpigiano Gelato University in Bologna, has roots in both Dallas and Italy. He was born in Milan and raised on a farm in Tuscany. His grandmother had her own gelato shop, and she and her sisters famously resurrected the epicurean magazine La Cucina Italiana. Carlo's family moved to Dallas, and his father opened the beloved MoMo Italian Kitchen, where Carlo helped serve the restaurant's classic Italian cuisine for more than 30 years, until the family sold the business in 2016.

Each Botolino shop offers 16 flavors of gelato and sorbetto, with eight classics and eight seasonal flavors in rotation. They use high-end authentic ingredients such as Valrhona chocolate and Tonde Gentile della Langhe hazelnuts from Nocciola d’Elite farm in Piedmont, Italy.

Classic flavors include pistachio (made from Bronte pistachios from Marullo Pistachio in Sicily), white coffee with cold-infused coffee from whole-bean Noble Coyote Coffee Roasters coffee, mascarpone & figs, milk chocolate, coconut straciatella with dark Valrhona chocolate slivers, and vanilla with Sava Bourbon vanilla beans from Madagascar.

Rotating flavors include tiramisu, Alpine almond bar with Sicilian almonds, Turkish coffee, and sorbets such as blueberry and lemon-rose.

They also do espresso drinks and indulgent desserts including cakes, sundaes, decadent brownies, and sticky toffee pudding topped with ice cream.

To mark the opening, customers who visit before May 21 can enter drawings for hands-on classes. The 2,000 square-foot shop, located a few doors north of Whole Foods Market, has a covered patio and ample parking.

“I look forward to welcoming guests to the new Plano Botolino - a great place for family gatherings, a place for first dates, a place to make meaningful memories with friends,” Gattini says.
