Dallas Marathon canceled after ice storm sweeps city
Winter Storm Cleon has thwarted plans for yet another Dallas event: officials announced the 2013 MetroPCS Dallas Marathon has been canceled due to dangerous weather conditions. The race was scheduled to begin at 8 am on Sunday, December 8.
In announcing the news, race spokesperson Chloe Jamerson said concerns for the safety of participants, volunteers and spectators spurred the unprecedented decision to cancel the race. The corresponding Health & Fitness Expo planned for Friday and Saturday has also been canceled.
Dallas has been under a winter storm warning since Thursday, December 5. Below-freezing temperatures are expected to continue through the weekend, leaving the ice that has accumulated little chance of melting anytime soon.
We met this morning with officials from the City of Dallas, Dallas Police Department and the Office of Special Events to assess the situation. Due to current weather conditions, and forecasted conditions for Saturday and Sunday, as of today at 12:40 pm, the decision has been collaboratively made to cancel the 2013 MetroPCS Dallas Marathon. We regret that the race will not go on as planned, but are confident this decision is in the best interest of our runners, volunteers, spectators and the general public.
