Hardworking Dallas nonprofit builds stability one affordable home at a time
Maria moved to Dallas from Mexico 14 years ago. She held a degree in architecture and set out in search of a promising new life in Texas. Hard times struck when Maria was told her architecture degree would not transfer to the United States.
She struggled to settle and plant her roots. As Maria’s rent seemed to constantly increase, she moved around from place to place, without much stability in her life.
Though she came to Dallas Habitat a little bit nervous, Maria kept an open mind and began to explore the special path to homeownership made possible through Habitat for Humanity. After years of chasing affordable rent while trying to avoid unsafe neighborhoods, Maria is happy to finally have a safe and secure place to call home.
Habitat for Humanity provides an incredible opportunity for families and people like Maria. Using affordable homeownership, Habitat brings hope, change, and stability to those who need it most.
Volunteers and future homeowners work side-by-side to build new homes by hand. Since 1986, Dallas Habitat has helped more than 1,600 low-income families and has invested approximately $125 million in Dallas-area neighborhoods.
