Japanese dollar store Daiso to open 2 DFW stores including Dallas proper
Japanese dollar store Daiso is opening its first store in Dallas proper, at the Mockingbird Commons center at Mockingbird Lane and Abrams Road.
The address is 6333 Mockingbird Ln. #141, on the east side of the center to the right of the Tom Thumb. They're taking the space next to ATI Physical Therapy and beneath the yoga studio — one that has seen some turnover, home at one point or another to a pet boutique, beauty salon, and numerous Christmas sweater and Halloween temporary stores.
Help wanted ads are already being posted, and according to a spokesperson, the store will open in early fall.
Simultaneously, they're opening another DFW location: in Watauga, at the Watauga Towne Crossing mall at 8028 Denton Hwy. #326.
Both stores are approximately 5,400 square feet, and both are set to open at around the same time.
Daiso was founded in Japan in 1977 and carries thousands of products: kitchenware, beauty supplies, stationery, wrapping paper, electronic accessories, greeting cards, party favors, and plushie toys, plus exotic-ish snacks such as wasabi peanuts.
Probably 90 percent of what they sell is cheap disposable stuff made of plastic, and there's lots of pink. Most items are under $10.
They first debuted in DFW in 2015 with a store in Carrollton, which was met with much fanfare since it was the first.
They've since opened locations in Irving, Plano, Frisco, Euless, Grapevine, Fort Worth, and Arlington. This one might not merit a hurrah were it not the very first in Dallas, and at such a central location.
These likely won't be the last. The company's goal is to open 1,000 stores in the U.S., with 30 new locations penciled in for 2023-2024.
They opened their first store in the U.S. in 2005, and currently have nearly 100 locations in seven states. Worldwide, they have more than 5,500 stores including 3,300 in Japan.
