Hipster taqueria OMG Tacos lavishes late-night nosh on Uptown Dallas
After two-plus years at winning the taco game in Richardson, ultra-hip taqueria OMG Tacos is expanding across DFW, with two new locations, one in Dallas and one in Fort Worth.
The Dallas location is in Uptown at 2600 Cedar Springs Rd., inside the space formerly known as Uptown Urban Market, which is being rebranded under the new name of The Commons at Cedar Springs.
It's located on the ground level of the Gables Villa Rosa apartment building, which is blocks away from Uptown bars such as Kung Fu Saloon, Citizen, and Level.
The bar thing is meaningful because OMG Tacos keeps late-night hours. Like its original location in Richardson and its second location at The Shacks in The Colony, Uptown Dallas will stay open until 3 am, making it a convenient destination after the bars close at 2 am.
Dallas has been on their to-do list since they opened in 2015, says Holly Nguyen, who owns the taqueria with partners Calvin Nguyen, Anthony Luong, and Sean Smith.
"We have so many guests who come from Dallas and have asked us to open there," she says. "Being in Uptown is ideal, and we also love this spot. It's a workspace hangout with comfortable chairs, TVs, outlets, and a great communal atmosphere."
OMG takes an original fusion approach on a menu that includes tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and tortas. But it's probably the sassy sides and extras that make them stand out.
Their acclaimed queso is a white version which you can get packed with a generous scoop of guacamole. They do nachos topped with your choice of meat, and have an entire menu of loaded fries, with toppings such as queso, steak, and pastor.
Their elotes come in two versions: the standard with mayo, butter, and cotija cheese, which you can mix yourself from a condiment bar; or topped with hot Cheetos.
They're still working out the menu for Dallas, but it's dependent on the kitchen situation. "It is a shared kitchen so we're figuring out how we'll make it work," Nguyen says.
One thing they know they won't do is alcohol, since the location already has an in-house bar.
The Fort Worth location is at 3011 Bledsoe St., and will open later in the spring. Like Uptown, it's positioned advantageously in an area that's rich with bars such as Varsity Tavern, which meshes perfectly with their open-until-3-am hours.
"We've been working on Fort Worth for a while now," Nguyen says. "Unlike Dallas, which was already built out, Fort Worth is a big construction project. It's right by Ampersand and Zenna Thai & Japanese Restaurant, which is opening soon. "We're friends with all those people — it feels cozy to be opening there with all our friends."
