Famed California bakery SusieCakes is bringing its pretty cakes to North Texas' happening foodie town Plano, in a shop at the intersection of Park and Preston.
This is SusieCakes' second location in the Dallas-Fort Worth area; the first opened at Preston Center in April 2016. There are currently 18 locations in California and Texas.
While the Preston Center branch has plenty of competition from sweet purveyors such as Carlo's Bakery, Sprinkles, Unrefined, and Panini, Plano seems like a more fertile ground, as it has fewer bakeries.
Baker and caterer Susan "Susie" Sarich opened her first store in 2006 in Brentwood, in Southern California. Championing an alternative to the artificial flavors and preservatives found at most grocery store bakeries, SusieCakes offers a variety of nostalgic desserts in a friendly, old-fashioned neighborhood experience.
Recipes come from Sarich's two grandmothers. Everything is made from scratch on-site. There is no high-fructose corn syrup, artificial preservatives, or trans-fats.
Their ingredients include Guittard chocolate, Tahitian vanilla bean, and European-style butter, which produces the rich flavor and smooth textures in all of their baked goods.
The six-layer vanilla celebration cake with confetti colors in the cake and pale blue frosting is the most popular; other flavors include carrot, coconut, marble, lemon, and red velvet.
There are also cupcakes, cheesecake, pies, pudding, bars, and cookies. The Dallas location also sells breakfast items, including muffins, coffee cake, granola, and coffee by Cultivar.
The Plano branch is located at 4909 W. Park Blvd, in the same shopping center as fellow California import Trader Joe's, and it will open at the end of October, according to a spokesperson.
