A globally renowned Mediterranean concept has closed in Dallas:: Miznon, a fast-casual concept founded by an Israeli celebrity chef, has closed its location at 2639 Main St. in Deep Ellum, after a year.
Scuttlebutt about a possible closure began in circulating in January 2025, and according to an Instagram post, the closure is permanent, one that the post says was executed with a "heavy heart."
Miznon was founded in Tel Aviv in 2011 by celebrity chef Eyal Shani, considered one of the leading figures in the Mediterranean culinary scene, who stars in TV series Food for Thought and serves as a judge on Israel’s Master Chef.
The menu at Miznon is centered around the pita, crafted by Jerusalem’s world-famous Angel Bakeries. Plates are set aside. Dishes are served in brown paper bags and cardboard. The decor is also magical with olive-colored walls decorated with chalk drawings showcasing colorful handwritten phrases in Hebrew and English.
Signature dishes include the hummus plate with chickpeas, and the "run over" potato, in which a potato is cooked, then flattened so that it becomes a thin toasty layer. Shani is also credited with spearheading the idea of a whole roasted cauliflower, which has become a staple not only at Miznon but at many other restaurants.
The chain has locations in Paris, Vienna, Melbourne, and Singapore, and the U.S., where it opened its first location in 2018 in Chelsea Market, New York.
When the Deep Ellum location opened Ellum in April 2024, it was one of.only of seven restaurants in the U.S., with more than 15 restaurants worldwide.
The concept was brought to Dallas by owner-franchisee Jude Akpunku, a native of Dallas who became a fan of Miznon after visiting the Tel Aviv location years ago. He opened a second location in DFW in The Colony in November 2024, and that location will stay open, Akpunku says.
Deep Ellum has not been an easy location for restaurants and the location that Miznon took over was the former Postino, which lasted there for less than two years. Prior to that, it was for many years the antique store Lula B's.
