RIP Toni
Dallas nonprofit founder and famous spouse Toni Chapman Brinker dies at 74
Dallas nonprofit founder Toni Chapman Brinker, who was married to famously wealthy men including business magnate T. Boone Pickens and restaurateur Norman Brinker, died on April 7; she was 74.
According to a friend of the family, she'd been battling lung cancer.
Toni Chapman Brinker Pickens was born on September 20, 1949 in Davenport, Iowa. Her family moved to Plainview, Texas, then Alabama, where she grew up. According to Heavy.com, her father worked as a chiropractor, and her upbringing was “humble.” As a young adult, she spent time in Las Vegas and on the West Coast.
In 2015, she founded Operation Blue Shield, an organization doing business as One Community USA, designed to bridge positive relations between first responders and law enforcement and the community, which netted her a Ted Talk.
The organization, which did not respond to a request for comment, hosts meetups at barbershops and local businesses such as a recent "Pizza with a Cop" in Irving, building relationships with officers and the community. Recipients of her generosity say she was a kind woman with a big heart for the community.
But she was best known for her marriages to two wealthy Dallas figures, first Brinker, then Pickens.
She and Brinker were married in 2003. Brinker founded restaurant company Brinker International, which owns more than 1,600 restaurants around the world including Chili’s and Maggiano’s Little Italy.
They were married until his death in 2009, and she subsequently represented Brinker International at conferences.
She met Pickens through her marriage to Brinker, and the two got married in 2014 at Pickens' ranch in Pampa, Texas - a small ceremony that nonetheless earned extensive media coverage. It was Pickens' fifth marriage, and Brinker's fourth.
They were married for only three years, and got divorced in 2017. Pickens passed away in 2019. Brinker's previous marital history is less well known.
