Editor’s note: Another week has come and gone, and there’s a lot we all probably missed. But we’re looking out for you, kid. Here are the most popular stories from this past week:
1. Debunking the top 5 myths about the new plastic bag law in Dallas. Dallas’ new plastic bag law went into effect on January 1, requiring supermarkets and other retailers to charge a nickel for every “single-use carryout bag.” The new law is designed to discourage people from using plastic bags in order to reduce litter and help the environment. Myths have surfaced in social media channels regarding plastic bags. As a public service, we’re clearing those up.
2. New Year’s Day brunch tops best food and drink events in DFW this week. Further evidence that Dallas cannot get enough brunch: A few Dallas restaurants served their weekend brunch menus on New Year’s Day, and a whole bunch of people wanted to read about it. There were other food events this week, all overshadowed by brunch.
3. Highland Park Village says goodbye to Number One and Chapter Two. On December 31, Brian Bolke closed two stores in his luxury empire: Number One and Chapter Two, next-door neighbors at Highland Park Village. Their closures will make room for a new grocery store concept. Five and Ten, Bolke’s other shop in HPV, is still open.
4. Texas reporter’s near-flawless rap warm-up takes Internet by storm. A vocal warm-up is a common ritual among reporters prior to going on air. What isn’t common is when the reporter opts out of a standard “Sally sells seashells by the seashore” and instead chooses to perform a lyrically complex, tongue-twisting rap like Blackalicious’ “Alphabet Aerobics.” She damn near nailed it, and the Interwebs went wild.
5. Fuel City stretches tacos-and-gas empire to sprawling Mesquite plot. Famed gas station-taqueria Fuel City is heading to Mesquite. The location at 2175 South Town East Blvd. is more than twice the size of the Dallas location’s eight acres. It will feature not only tacos but also an outlet of the Original Fried Pie Shop, along with 32 gas pumps.
