Tucker's Picks

One lucky dog's list of the best parks and backyards in Dallas

When it comes to Dallas’ parks, greenbelts and backyards, it’s a dog’s life — I should know! Our pup-friendly city has more than 100 miles of trails for hiking, biking, skating and, most important, dog walking.

For those looking for more laid-back activities, Dallas also boasts loads of parks made for playing, lounging, ball throwing and snacking. And if your family is looking for a new home sweet home, the backyard is an important part of the real estate equation.

As a pooch that relishes his time outdoors (not to mention car rides with the windows down!), I’ve been to most of the grassy areas around town and have sniffed out the very best. Whether you’re up for meeting cool new canines or prefer to splash around in a fountain, here’s my list of some of the very best green spaces in the city.

Best Trail

The Katy Trail is a 3.5-mile course through Uptown. The trail is so popular, you’ll find joggers, cyclists, skaters, bladers and walkers from morning to night. It’s one of my favorite places to catch up with my other four-legged friends and get “tuckered-out.” The paved trail is flanked by trees, brush and flora.
Best reason to visit: exercise with friends

Best Parks

Klyde Warren Park, which opened in Dallas in 2013, is a 5.2-acre deck park built over the Woodall Rogers Freeway in downtown Dallas. Here, you’ll find playgrounds, walking trails, food trucks and restaurants, and putting green, as well as areas for concerts, films showings and performance broadcasts.
Best reason to visit: A dog park, complete with fountains, is the perfect place to cool off during those hot summer afternoons.

Lakeside Park, located in Highland Park, is the place to go for 14 acres of lushly landscaped paths bordering Turtle Creek. There are also playground areas and a collection of concrete Teddy Bear statues.
Best reason to visit: plenty of open space for bunny runs, playing fetch and friendly strolls

Lake Cliff Park is 44.5 acres of green space located in heart Oak Cliff, near the Bishop Arts District. A tranquil retreat, this park features fountains, gardens and a lake area. It’s a great place to walk, run and relax.
Best reason to visit: a paw-fect natural setting for quiet time and pup naps

Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden is not only one of the very best outdoor areas in the city, but it’s also one of the best in the nation. With 66 acres of expertly manicured grounds, patrons enjoy gardens, water structures, leisure areas and dining. Last fall, the Arboretum opened its latest phase, the Rory Meyers Children's Adventure Garden, an 8-acre indoor and outdoor nature experience for children.
Best reason to visit: Beauty — human companions will love the incredible variety of plants and flowers.

Best Backyards You can Own

There are three backyards you have to see to believe. The first one is located at 4346 Park Ln. The Preston Hollow home is beautifully set back on 1.1 acres, and the backyard has major play potential.
Best reason to visit: This home has a resort-style pool (great for practicing the doggy paddle) and an outdoor entertainment area.

In Old Preston Hollow, the backyard at 5433 Falls Rd. is worth a million barks. An oasis for humans and hounds alike, there’s a huge covered outdoor area (great for naptime or alone time), as well as a pool and spa.
Best reason to visit: The expansive lawn and towering trees provide serene shade for bird watching.

In University Park, 7800 Amherst Ave. is another home with a beautiful backyard I could roll around in for days. It’s on a corner lot, which means there’s heaps of greenspace.
Best reason to visit: The covered patio is the perfect hangout in the dog days of summer.

Texas shocks as America's No. 3 least safe state in 2026 report

Texas ranks as the 48th "safest" state — out of 50.

While no state is invulnerable, some do more to protect their residents than others. And a new study has declared Texas one of the five least safe states in America.

WalletHub's "Safest States in America (2026)" report examined all 50 states for their emergency preparedness and for residents' personal and residential, financial, workplace, and road safety. Factors that weighed into the rankings include specific crime rates per capita, the share of the population that is uninsured, road quality ratings, workplace injury statistics, and more.

Texas ranked at the bottom of the list as the 48th "safest" state — or the third least safe state. It's joined by several other Southern states, like Mississippi (No. 50), Louisiana (No. 49), Florida (No. 47), and Arkansas (No. 46).

According to WalletHub, Texas specifically ranks third to last in the nationwide "emergency preparedness" category, which was determined based on the prevalence of climate disasters causing $1 billion or more in damages from 1980-2024, and the loss amount resulting from those disasters.

The Lone Star State also ranked 40th (or 10th worst) across three safety categories: personal and residential safety, financial safety, and road safety. The report additionally found that Texas has the highest rate of uninsured residents nationally.

Texas' "workplace safety" was the state's highest-ranking category, landing 30th nationally.

Additional rankings that determined Texas' overall safety include:

  • No. 30 – Assaults per capita
  • No. 32 – Fatal occupational injuries per 100,000 full-time workers
  • No. 32 – Sex offenders per capita
  • No. 35 – Murders and non-negligent manslaughters per capita
  • No. 36 – Fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles of travel
  • No. 41 – Loss amounts from climate disasters per capita

According to the report, the five safest states in America are all located in the Northeast. Vermont leads as the country's safest state in 2026, followed by Massachusetts (No. 2), Maine (No. 3), New Hampshire (No. 4), and Connecticut (No. 5).

Though every state has varying levels of safety, WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo asserted that the safest places in the U.S. categorically invest in protecting their residents. Top-ranking states have low crime rates and diligently maintain their road infrastructure, and other states that prioritize their residents' safety have "strong economies and job markets that prevent people from falling into dangerous financial situations."

"[The safest states in America] have high levels of occupational safety and disaster preparedness, too," Lupo said. "In addition, states are made safer by efforts that individual residents take, such as forming a neighborhood watch or working in firefighting and EMT jobs at high rates."
