Best Patios

The 10 best new Dallas patios for eating and drinking al fresco

Lindsey Wilson
Mar 15, 2016 | 3:59 pm

When the weather is like it is now, we will find a place, any place, to sit outside. It doesn't even have to be pretty. But these 10 restaurants and bars not only recently(ish) increased Dallas' patio quotient, but they also meet the ambience requirements.

Back Home BBQ
It just feels right to eat smoked meats outside. The owners of Back Home BBQ knew that, so they added a patio to the front of the building when they took over the former Yin's Wok space in early 2015. With lights strung from the beams and kitschy Astroturf below your flip-flops, it's easy to imagine you're at a family cookout.

Blind Butcher
When it first opened, Blind Butcher's patio caused an uproar with nearby residents, who had previously complained about noise from the former Service Bar. But Blind Butcher draws a more mellow crowd, making the large patio a place to kick back and relax with a beer, while enjoying the gentle breezes that blow before the scorching heat takes over.

Eight Bells Alehouse
Expo Park isn't exactly known for its outdoor spaces; if you want to get some fresh air, you typically wander around Fair Park. But Eight Bells Alehouse addressed this lack by opening "the biggest patio in the area" and offering live jazz out there on Sunday nights to boot. This is a good place to chill, because it's not on a happening strip or surrounded by other patios.

El Bolero
Much like Eight Bells, you may not assume that El Bolero's location would be ideal for a patio. But the owners did a work-around with the Oak Lawn street corner, building a high wall and decorating the space with colorful tiles, twinkling lights, bright umbrellas, and a unique stone and grass patterned floor.

Goat Ranch
A wackier version of a bar and driving range, this new "entertainment destination" from the guys behind Bowlounge is supposed to be mainly about hitting odd targets with your golf ball. But because the range won't be fully finished until summer, it's time to focus your attention on the huge bar, which overflows to outside so you can watch all the weird action going down.

Happiest Hour
It claims to be Dallas' largest patio bar and lounge, and with 12,000 square feet, it's kind of hard to argue. Right across from the American Airlines Center, Happiest Hour boasts eight wines and more than 50 beers on tap, along with craft cocktails and delicious dishes. But those views!

High Fives
The team propelling So & So's has turned this former Biergarten space into another patio-happy bar, one that is dog-friendly, features live music, and offers yet another way to people-watch the crowds milling around Henderson Avenue.

Pints & Quarts
The space at the corner of Ross and Greenville avenues lived as a tire shop for seemingly forever, but now the hot dog and hamburger mecca Pints & Quarts is staking out the spot. Relaxed and low-key, with great people-watching down the busy street, P&Q's patio serves as a terrific base for regrouping during Sunday Funday or happy hour-hopping.

True Food Kitchen
The partially covered, neon-colored patio at this Park Cities hot spot shelters ladies who lunch — and, sometimes, their kids — from the oppressive Dallas heat. Sip a signature "natural refresher" drink, and add some organic and gluten-free spirits to it if you're feeling sassy.

Vetted Well
The bar and restaurant attached to, but separate from, the new Alamo Drafthouse in the Cedars doesn't just have an enviable built-in crowd; it also has a big second-story balcony that presents sweeping views of the downtown skyline to those sipping their craft cocktails.

Want even more patios? Here are our lists from 2015, 2014, and 2013, along with our favorite dog-friendly patios.

Aguas Chicas DFW
Agaus Chicas DFW
The Aguas Chicas will lead a mocktail party at the Dallas Arboretum.

The unofficial start to fall is here, but Mother Nature is still in summer mode. Keep cool with a lesson on how to make refreshing mocktails led by a popular Dallas sister act mobile caterer. Or, make plans to sip fine wine atop a 49th floor downtown restaurant, take part in a spirits tasting with a distillery owner in McKinney, or indulge in a four-course tequila pairing dinner in Frisco.

Tuesday, September 8

Meridian’s Chef Collective: Chef Reilly Brown
Meridian's Chef Collective series continues with special guest Reilly Brown of Frenchie, who'll collab with Meridian exec-chef Eduardo Osorio for a multi-course menu. Highlights from the progression of seasonal dishes include citrus-cured red snapper with compressed watermelon, chawanmushi (Japanese egg custard) with caviar and grilled kombu oil, and Pacific halibut with scallop and truffle mousse. Reservations are $185 and seating times run from 5-8:30 pm.

Premium Wine and Pasta Pairing at Lone Star Winery
There are just a few seats left for this guided pasta pairing experience at historic downtown McKinney’s Lone Star Winery. Tickets are $49 and the tasting will run from 7-8:30 pm.

Saturday, September 12

Taste the List at Monarch
Discover Monarch’s award-winning wine list during this sip-and-stroll experience inside the 49th floor downtown Dallas restaurant. The $125 ticket price includes charcuterie and light bites and the event will run from 2:30-5 pm.

Aguas Chicas DFW Mocktail Party at Dallas Arboretum
Kick off Hispanic Heritage Month with this garden party featuring an interactive mocktail-making experience. Learn to craft three vibrant alcohol-free libations, including the Pink Topo Mocktail, Spicy Cucumber Lemonade, and Melon Creamsicle. Class will be led by Aguas Chicas DFW and will run from 3-5 pm. Tickets are $79 or $69 for Arboretum members.

YaVe Tequila Dinner at Cantina Laredo
The Frisco location of the Tex-Mex chain will host a four-course tequila cocktail-pairing dinner featuring YaVe Tequila, which comes in jalapeño, coconut, and mango flavors, as well as blanco and reposado varieties. (YaVe is a play on the Spanish word llave, which means “key.”) Menu items include a mesclun greens and pistachio salad; sundried tomato chipotle soup; grouper with mustard cream sauce or veal chop with guajillo wild mushrooms; and a warm cookie topped with pumpkin ice cream. Guests will partake in a tequila flight during a reception at 7 pm, followed by the seated dinner at 7:30 pm. Reservations are $79.99.

Monday, September 14

Spirits Sensory at Lockwood Distilling Co.
Take a guided spirits tasting with Lockwood Distilling Co. owner Evan Batt. Participants will learn exercises used by the pros to evaluate spirits. The $45 ticket also includes a personal grazing board and discounts on bottles. The tasting will run from 6:30-8:30 pm at Lockwood’s McKinney location.
