    The 10 best burgers in Dallas: How can we pick just one winner?

    It's time for another segment in our annual Tastemaker Awards, which honor the top talent in the Dallas restaurant industry. Over the next few weeks, we're dedicating stories to these champions-to-be, as a build-up to our grand tasting event on May 14, 7-10 pm, at the Empire Room in the Design District.

    To see what we've covered so far, check out our overview, and our nominees for Bartender of the Year and Bar of the Year.

    For our 2015 edition, we're devoting a special chapter to one of the most hotly debated food categories of all: burgers. Few foodstuffs have received as much attention as this simple ground beef patty, and that's even more true in the past few years as a wave of so-called "better burger" joints washed across Dallas-Fort Worth. Our list includes some of those players, who go up against some longtime classics.

    From these 10 finalists, a winner will be announced at our party (for which you can buy tickets here), featuring signature snacks from top restaurants and a cocktail face-off hosted by Herradura between our Bartender of the Year nominees.

    The Grape
    Veteran Greenville Avenue bistro has decades of history under its belt, renowned chefs, a legendary wine list, a stellar manager and its beloved cream of mushroom soup. But thanks to an award from Texas Monthly, The Grape has become known for its burger. This is a burger done chef-style: The meat is ground in-house; the bacon is cured onsite. Bibb lettuce, perfect red tomato, white cheddar and a mustard-mayo blend sit tall on a sweet, buttered, toasted brioche bun.

    Henry's Majestic
    Fancy sibling of Bread Winners boasts many good things, including serious cocktails and some intriguing dishes. Those include the marrow burger, one of the city's most distinctive specimens. The patty is made of well-marbled Akaushi beef, topped with a layer of flavorful marrow, just-melting aged cheddar, crisp strips of bacon and caramelized onions on a glossy, eggy brioche.

    Keller's
    American Graffiti-style drive-in comes literally straight out of the '50s, with old-fashioned burgers delivered via carhops and a fun car-culture vibe. Their burger is like a homemade version of fast food, with a thin patty, American cheese and shredded lettuce on a soft poppy-seed bun. At $2.35, the cheeseburger is cheap enough that you can splurge on a side of Tater tots.

    Knife
    This modern steakhouse in the stylish Highlands Dallas hotel does a modern, innovative twist on steak, featuring all kinds of beef, including some aged up to 240 days. You can get that in the dining room with a nice bottle of red. But as he proved at his now-closed One Arts Plaza restaurant The Commissary, chef John Tesar is the consummate burger flipper. His Ozersky burger is a winner: topped with slivered red onions and two slices of American cheese, placed just so.

    Liberty
    As a member of the famed Street family (Good Eats, Black Eyed Pea), Mariel Street is part of Dallas restaurant royalty. Rather than coast on the family name, she started her own Hopdoddy-style chain, with a dozen high-end burgers and wine by the glass too. Its best entries run healthy; the turkey burger topped with mustard on a wheat bun is sweet, and the veggie burger is a frequent best-list topper.

    Maple & Motor
    Do not sit at a table until after you order. The rules at M&M are very, very important. They must be followed. But if you comply, you will be rewarded. There's a homespun quality to the thick, juicy patties, cooked on a griddle until pink in the middle and set on a bun that's buttered and toasted. Topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mustard, cheese, bacon and griddled jalapeños, it's the perfect Texas burger.

    Off-Site Kitchen
    Cheap and no-frills — and, yet, in its own way high end — OSK is a chef's fantasy of what a burger joint is. It's where foodies go for a burger when they feel like "slumming" — i.e., the more industrial side of the Design District (which is hardly slumming at all). The price point is a draw; the renowned Locals Only burger is $4.75. It's a medium-rare patty, with thick bacon and a harmonious balance of ingredients that includes mustard, American cheese and jalapeño.

    Rodeo Goat
    First launched in Fort Worth in late 2012, this stab at the burger concept by the Wynne family (Flying Saucer, Meddlesome Moth) comes off nicely, with a list of fancy burgers and, of course, a firm commitment to craft beer. A Dallas branch, newly opened in the Design District, has a pretty patio and a menu of burgers with quirky titles such as the one named for Mayor Mike Rawlings with Irish cheddar. The classic remains the "Caca Oaxaca," a beef and chorizo burger with avocado, pico de gallo, queso fresco, Tabasco mayo and a fried egg.

    Swiss Pastry Shop
    Owner Hans Muller has recast this quaint Fort Worth diner as a burger destination, by deploying an ever-changing lineup of creative burger specials. He uses fancy meat, often Wagyu, adds a goodly dose of salt and pepper, puts it on a house-made bun, and tops it with all manner of things. Latest edition: a 12-ounce Wagyu burger ground with smoked bacon, topped with four slices of American cheese, "P.L.O.T." and a house-made "special sauce."

    Wingfield's
    D Magazine made this modest to-go joint locally famous when it pronounced the burger the best in 2006. Richard Wingfield mans the grill at this takeout-only, Oak Cliff joint wedged between a car lot and a mechanic's garage. The burger is big and sloppy, with a monster hand-molded patty, American cheese, shredded iceberg, sliced tomato and sharp red onion on a nothing-fancy bun. Even without bacon on top, it has a bacon flavor, but go ahead and get bacon.

    After months of buildup, the best restaurants, chefs, and bars of the year were revealed and celebrated at our 2026 CultureMap Dallas Tastemaker Awards.

    On May 7, the winners were crowned at a tasting event and awards ceremony, hosted by NBC5 Texas Today host Cleo Greene, at Astoria Event Venue in Irving.

    In the weeks leading up to the big event, we published a special editorial series highlighting nominees. A panel of expert judges helped select all of the winners, except Best New Restaurant, which was determined by our readers in a bracket-style tournament.

    Without further delay, let's raise a glass to the 2026 Dallas Tastemaker Awards winners:

    Restaurant of the Year: Mamani
    This French restaurant made a splash immediately when it debuted in 2025, as the Michelin Guide awarded it a coveted one-star rating just 60 days after the doors opened. Even with those lofty expectations, chef Christophe De Lellis has managed to consistently produce some of the city’s finest dishes. From the jaw-dropping veal cordon bleu to the Paris-Brest dessert, everything on the menu at Mamani is a star.

    Chef of the Year: Peja Krstic, Mot Hai Ba, Pillar
    Michelin-recognized Vietnamese restaurant Mot Hai Ba has been going strong for over a decade, and Southern American bistro Pillar has been drumming up buzz in Bishop Arts since 2024. Those concepts from chef Peja Krstic prove his range and skill as both a chef and restaurateur. He’s a frontrunner in Dallas’ culinary scene and beyond, having gained international acclaim when Mot Hai Ba was named a Bib Gourmand restaurant in the inaugural Texas Michelin Guide in 2024.

    Bar of the Year: Ayahuasca Cantina
    While you won’t find this Oak Cliff bar’s namesake psychedelic on the menu, there are still plenty of exciting sips that will shift your frame of mind. The cocktails range from ancient fermented drinks like pulque and tepache to much more modern libations like the Maria, which blends premium Mexican rum with tamarind and cream cheese in what is a texturally fascinating and flavorful drink. It’s the perfect thing to sip before enjoying chef Hugo Galvan’s menu at the adjacent Xaman Cafe.

    Best New Restaurant: Frenchie
    As its name might indicate, this sweet little spot in The Plaza at Preston Center is focused on French cuisine, with Bruno Davaillon, the city’s most stalwart French chef, behind the project and executive chef Reilly Brown currently leading the kitchen. Inside the bright and vivacious dining room, you’ll find classic plates like light and cheesy gougeres, French onion soup, and a spring-y pea risotto. It’s also a must-add to your brunch rotation, thanks to dishes like the Provencale tomato tart.

    Rising Star Chef of the Year: Eduardo Osorio, Meridian
    Executive chef Eduardo Osorio took the reins of Meridian when it staged its big comeback last year, following a 2024 closure and revamp. Under Osorio's direction, Meridian now celebrates seasonal ingredients and the jovial, comforting nature of Italian and New American cuisine against a backdrop of live-fire cooking. Think chilled clams infused with smoky essence, wood-fired chicken, and grilled Spanish octopus.

    Neighborhood Restaurant of the Year: Beverley's Bistro & Bar
    Named for owner Greg Katz’s mother Beverley, this boisterous bistro on Fitzhugh Avenue has been effortlessly balancing chic and casual since its 2019 debut. Its sophisticated interiors and eclectic menu make Beverley’s the exact kind of spot where you want to bring a group of friends and order everything on the menu, especially the caviar-topped latkes and immaculately shucked oysters.

    Dessert Program of the Year: Lucia
    With Maggie Huff, 2026 James Beard finalist for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker, at the helm, it’s no surprise Lucia’s dessert program is a standout. The intimate, award-winning Italian eatery in Bishop Arts serves a rotating menu with sweet bites such as semolina cake with roasted grapes, rosemary, honey, and pistachio ice cream. Diners can opt for a tropical escape with coconut sorbet with nectarines and lime and mint pesto. For an earthy experience, there’s the hazelnut frangipane and goat cheese tart with figs and balsamic vinegar ice cream.

    Coffee Shop of the Year: Ascension
    A stalwart of Dallas-Fort Worth’s craft coffee scene since 2012, Ascension now serves its painstakingly sourced beans at six locations across the Metroplex. It’s committed to ethically and sustainably sourcing beans from the planet’s finest coffee growing locations and roasting them at its roastery in Dallas’ Design District, before brewing them into crema-topped shots of espresso or a perfect pourover. And for those who love a sweet latte, Ascension excels at those, too, as anyone who’s tried the popular horchata latte can attest.

    Best Sandwich: Trades Delicatessen
    If you’re looking to splurge on a great sandwich in DFW, Trades Delicatessen is your destination. You won’t find sandwich-chain prices here, but the decadent French dip, made with hand-shaved ribeye and grilled onions, is absolutely worth the cost. The menu also features a stellar turkey melt, plus housemade pastrami and juicy Italian beef.
