Happy and sad restaurant news tops 5 most popular stories this week

    Jennifer Chininis
    Apr 25, 2015 | 9:39 am

Editor’s note: Another week has come and gone, and there’s a lot we all probably missed. But we’re looking out for you, kid. Here are the most popular stories from this past week:

    1. New Dallas townhomes offer young professionals everything they want where they want it. A new townhome village gives young professionals a prime option just minutes from downtown Dallas and a plethora of retail and restaurant options. Villas at Garrett Avenue provide the perfect home base for the active singleton or young married couple who likes to spend their leisure time in Uptown, Lower Greenville or Knox-Henderson.

    2. Impending Uptown restaurant closure can’t darken this sunny batch of food news. You can tell the season just by looking at the menus of restaurants around Dallas-Fort Worth, where spring dishes are sprouting. There are more tacos, more pizza and more brunch. All of that spring growth cannot be stunted by the impending closure of one of Dallas’ oldest restaurants.

    3. Gino’s East pizzeria sets date to begin DFW deep-dish domination. There is an end in sight for those who have been waiting patiently for Gino’s East pizzeria to arrive in Dallas-Fort Worth: April 30 is opening day for the Arlington branch coming to 1350 E. Copeland Rd.

    4. Henderson Avenue bar checks out after 5 years in Dallas. After five years of serving cocktails and upscale pub grub on trendy Henderson Avenue, J. Black’s Feel Good Kitchen & Lounge will close on May 2. According to the owners, the uptick in bars in the surrounding area created increased competition for business.

    5. Dream about a pristinely preserved midcentury? This Dallas home is it. There’s a house in East Dallas that appears untouched since it was built in 1959, and it can be yours for $295,000. Located in Lochwood, 10504 Lake Gardens Dr. is 1,533 square feet of retro perfection, from Terrazzo floors and decorative dividers to original pendant light fixtures and knotty wood paneling.

    J. Black's is closing May 2.

Netflix reveals long-anticipated drop date for new Selena documentary

So who's hosting the Selena y Los Dinos watch party on November 17?

An award-winning documentary detailing the life and legacy of late Tejano music icon Selena Quintanilla has finally received a launch date for its Netflix debut: Selena y Los Dinos will be begin streaming on Monday, November 17, the streaming service confirmed in a press release.

The documentary, directed by Isabel Castro, gives an intimate look into the singer's life and delves deeper into the close-knit connections she created with her bandmates, which included siblings A.B. III and Suzette, and Chris Pérez, the band's guitarist who eventually became her husband.

The buzzy film first premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, had its Texas debut at SXSW earlier this year, and also headlined the 2025 CineFestival in San Antonio in July. It won the US Documentary Special Jury Award for Archival Storytelling at the Sundance Film Festival, and snapped up a SXSW Audience Award in the musical story category 24 Beats Per Second.

Castro said in the release that she honored Selena's "extraordinary rise" to fame while showing the unseen side of the singer's life "behind the stage" as a daughter, sister, and wife.

"Through personal archive and intimate interviews with her family, the film reveals new dimensions of her journey that have never been seen before," Castro said.

Even three decades after her death, fans around the world still show an unwavering support for the Queen of Tejano Music. Selena's legacy has been displayed in a popular 1997 biopic starring Jennifer Lopez, a 2020 Netflix series, a national podcast, a Quintanilla family-owned museum in Corpus Christi, and most recently a public photography and fashion exhibit at Texas State University in San Marcos.

Around Texas, she's inspired everything from Christmas light displays to university courses.

Selena's music also attracts about 9.47 monthly listeners on Spotify.

In May, Deadline reported that Netflix's deal to purchase rights to the film was estimated to be between $6 to $7 million.
