    This Week in Gluttony

Sunday supper and corn dog beatdown top best food events in Dallas this week

    Diana Oates
    Jun 30, 2015 | 6:00 am

This Week in Gluttony seems a little quiet, but we presume that’s because Dallasites are firing up the grills; icing down some beers; and dragging out some red, white and blue. For those who do not delight in such Fourth of July traditions, these events might satisfy.

    Tuesday, June 30

Grand Opening Celebration at Val’s Cheesecakes
Join Val’s Cheesecakes as it celebrates the opening of its first brick-and-mortar location. Enjoy food from Easy Slider and La Popular at Peak & Elm, beverages from next-door neighbor Grapevine Bar, and, of course, cheesecakes. The party lasts from 6-9 pm.

    Thursday, July 2

Matt’s Mug Coffee School at Whole Foods Preston Forest
Coffee guru Matt Bowles is teaching a series of coffee classes this summer; at this one, learn the best tools and techniques for bringing out coffee flavor with pour-over methods. Tasting is, of course, included in the $5 ticket price. Class starts at 6 pm.

    Saturday, July 4

Fourth of July Weekend Specials at Capitol Pub
All weekend get $2 Lone Star, Pabst Blue Ribbon, hot dogs and corn dogs. DJ Kwasar kicks off the holiday at 10 pm on Friday.

Harvest Festival Kickoff Bash at Messina Hof Winery
This celebration — the start of the two-month-long festival taking place across all three Messina Hof locations — features wine, food trucks, artists and merchants, scavenger hunt, face painting, and the famous grape stomp competition. Teams of two to four people can compete in the grape stomping for $50 per team. Admission is free from noon-6 pm.

Holiday Sushi Specials at Steel Restaurant & Lounge
What’s red, white and half-off? Sushi at this Oak Lawn favorite, where the special is happening through Sunday. Diners can also enjoy half-price bottles of wine on Sunday. Call 214-219-9908 for reservations.

Party by the Pool at BarBelmont
Hang poolside and watch the Fair Park fireworks display at the Belmont Hotel. Listen to tunes spun by DJ David Gover with Spinster Records and nosh on street tacos, chips and salsa, and popsicles. Drink specials include $6 specialty cocktails, $5 house wine by the glass and $2.50 Lone Star beer. Chairs and blankets are welcome. Cover charge is $20; food and bevs are extra. Fun lasts from 6-10:30 pm.

Seventh Annual Brass Knuckle Corn Dog Beatdown at Libertine Bar
Can you eat more than any of your friends? Are you ready to party with people who don’t play around when it comes to corn dogs? It is free to sign up for the competition, and the winner gets a $100 gift certificate. Second place gets a $50 gift certificate; third place wins $25 in quarters. Fun starts at 3 pm.

Gourmet market Ari's Pantry to open in Dallas' Trinity Groves

A new gourmet grocery is coming to Trinity Groves: Ari's Pantry, the market launched in Oak Cliff by husband-and-wife Ari and Amy Lowenstein, will open a second location in West Dallas’ Trinity Groves, with a grand opening celebration on Saturday, November 30.

Located at 3011 Gulden Ln. #119 in the space that was once home to Potato Flats who remembers them, the Trinity Groves store will offer: pasta, olive oil, vinegars, preserves, candy, bread, crackers, cheese, meats, pizza dough, fresh pasta, housewares, cocktail ingredients, novelty kitchen gadgets, spices, prepared foods, fresh pesto and Ari’s own tomato sauce.

“We are excited to open our newest location at Trinity Groves joining the great businesses already there and the wave of new ventures opening in the development,” Ari Lowenstein says in a release. “With this location we will reach a new audience in West Dallas and be closer to our customers coming from downtown and the north.”

The couple opened their first location in Winnetka Heights at 1307 ½ W. Davis St. in December 2023 to fulfill Ari's passion for all things Italy. The idea was a small Italian food store with recipe-ready staples, with a hyper-local vibe. It has since blossomed into a general-purpose gourmet stop.

In addition to the food staples for sale found at their Bishop Arts location, Ari’s Trinity Groves location will also include a commercial catering kitchen that will enable them to provide full-service catering, prepared meal pick-up, pasta classes, and private dinners.

“Amy and Ari bring something new and special to this development as our first partner to offer consumer packaged goods made by people and companies outside of Trinity Groves,” said Sam Romano, Partner at West Dallas Investments, parent company of Trinity Groves. “They are part of the vision we have for the future of Trinity Groves that will combine innovative, up and coming chefs and restauranteurs with lifestyle and entertainment options like pickleball, bocce ball, popup events, arcade game play and additional retail partners.”

The Ari's empire doesn't stop here: Their goal is to open multiple locations "in all corners of DFW and beyond," and that includes a location in the Cyprus Waters community in Coppell, slated to open in spring 2025.
