    Giving Thanks

5 Dallas things for which we are thankful this year

    Lindsey Wilson
    Nov 25, 2015 | 11:52 am

It's been a good year in Dallas, so we thought we'd take a moment this Thanksgiving to reflect on all the happenings that made us smile. Feel free to tell us in the comments about anything we might have missed — that is, if you're not too busy with the turkey and sweet potatoes.

    Hot, hot homes
2015 saw Dallas soar to the top of the real estate market, mainly because it's quickly becoming the place to be. Big companies such as Toyota and Liberty Mutual Insurance are moving — and bringing jobs — here, and the the city's cred is expanding with the opening of renowned eateries like Uchi, major art installations like Aurora, and first-in-the-country concept stores like J. Crew Mercantile. Local homeowners have rejoiced with the rise in their property values.

    The new "it" pastry
We're so over cupcakes. And cake balls. But you know what we can get excited about? Macarons. Not to be confused with coconut macaroons (quelle horreur!) these French meringue-based pastries are tough to make, so we appreciate how much easier they've become to procure in Dallas. Local confectioners like Joy Macarons, Bisous Bisous Patisserie, and Kate Weiser Chocolate are turning out these temperamental treats, and for that we are thankful.

    Innovative movers and shakers
Dallas may be the best place to start a business. Not only have we seen a surge in retail expansion and cool apps this year, but we've also got a bevy of innovators and mentors making their mark on the city. From entrepreneurial havens like CommonDesk, to powerhouse personalities like Tech Wildcatters' Molly Cain, DEC's Trey Bowles, and Fort Work's Oren Salomon, our tech scene is full of support to get fresh ideas off to a roaring start.

    The return of Tony Romo
After Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo went down with a broken collarbone in week two of the NFL season, the team lost all seven games that he missed. Upon his return on November 22 against the Miami Dolphins, the team came back to life, showing just what a valuable asset Romo is. The Cowboys are in last place in the NFC East but sit only two games out of first due to the dreadful state of the division. With six games left to play, it's possible that the Cowboys could come back to win the division. And if they do, they'll have Romo to thank for bringing them back to the promised land.

    Sexy politicians
In May, Dallas had an election that, like a miracle cure, turned our city government younger overnight. The city council is now dominated by a slate of young progressives who are willing to challenge the status quo and stop Dallas from doing things the same old way. Council members like Philip Kingston, Mark Clayton, and Scott Griggs are helping to change the conversation about where we're going as a city. They're not only giving democracy a reboot, they're making politics fun to watch.

The era of the macaron has arrived, and we couldn't be happier.
