    Weekend Event Planner

Country music superstars blaze into 16 best Dallas events this weekend

    Alex Bentley
    May 8, 2025 | 6:00 am

The run of weekends with almost too much to do continues around Dallas, headlined by a big concert with a pre-game party. Other choices include a great art experience, a Smurfs event, an awards show with Country music royalty, four theater productions, a legendary singer in concert, a dance production, a symphony concert, a celebration of military aircraft, a Asian American festival, a visit from a famous foodie, a unique stringed-instrument concert, and an event featuring two very funny comedians.

Below are the best ways to spend your free time this weekend. If you want more options, check out the calendar for an even longer list of the city's best events.

    Thursday, May 8

Dallas Museum of Art presents "Return to Infinity: Yayoi Kusama"
For the first time since 2018, the DMA will install Yayoi Kusama’s All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins, an iteration of the artist’s iconic “Infinity Mirrored Rooms” incorporating one of the artist’s quintessential symbols, the pumpkin. This boundary-pushing experiential work draws on several of Kusama’s characteristic themes, including infinity, the sublime, and obsessive repetition, allowing the viewer to literally become a part of the art. The exhibition will remain on display through January 18, 2026.

    The Smurf Experience
The Smurf Experience is an immersive attraction that lets guests transform into a Smurf with a mission to save the planet from the evil wizard, Gargamel. Traveling through Smurf Village, the Enchanted Forest, and Gargamel’s lair, The Smurf Experience includes scavenger hunts, obstacle courses, virtual reality adventures, meet-and-greets with beloved Smurf characters, and more. The event will continue through at least August 11 at Esports Stadium Arlington.

60th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards
The 60th Academy of Country Music Awards will celebrate the best in Country music. Hosted by Reba McEntire, the milestone show honors six decades of unforgettable performances, iconic artists, and rising stars shaping the genre today. Performers will include Chris Stapleton, Ashley McBryde, Kane Brown, Kelsea Ballerini, Lainey Wilson, Luke Combs, Miranda Lambert, and more. The event takes place at the Ford Center in Frisco.

AT&T Performing Arts Center presents Forbidden Broadway: Merrily We Stole a Song
From Frozen to Phantom to Wicked, Forbidden Broadway is a satirical roast of over 30 Broadway hits featuring outrageous costumes, silly spoofs of the songs you know by heart, and madcap impressions by a stellar cast. A New York sensation for 35 years, a talented quintet of comic chameleons throw out pointed parodies at a dizzying pace. The production will have four performances through Saturday at Wyly Theatre.

Paul Simon in concert: A Quiet Celebration
Legendary singer/songwriter Paul Simon, now 83 years old, will make a rare live appearance after retiring from touring in 2018. One of the few artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice - for his work with Simon & Garfunkel and his solo career - Simon will present the live debut of his 2023 Grammy-nominated album, Seven Psalms, alongside a celebration of his timeless classics. The second of two concerts (the first took place Wednesday) will be at Winspear Opera House.

    Friday, May 9

    Post Malone's Travelin' Tailgate
It's a big enough deal that Post Malone is bringing his F-1 Trillion tour to AT&T Stadium on Friday, where he'll be joined by Jelly Roll and Sierra Ferrell, but it will be preceded by the Travelin’ Tailgate, a free event that's open to anyone, regardless of whether you have a concert ticket or not. Running from 12-6 pm outside the stadium, it will feature live music, food, beer, merch, carnival games, photo opportunities, and tattoos by Posty’s personal tattoo artists.

Theatre Arlington presents The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
15-year-old Christopher has an extraordinary brain: He is exceptional at mathematics but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched, and he distrusts strangers. Now it is seven minutes after midnight, and Christopher stands beside his neighbor’s dead dog, Wellington, who has been speared with a garden fork. Finding himself under suspicion, Christopher is determined to solve the mystery, but his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a thrilling journey that upturns his world. The production runs through May 25 at Theatre Arlington.

    Avant Chamber Ballet presents Masterworks
Masterworks showcases the artistic genius of four renowned choreographers with a live orchestra. It features masterpieces by August Bournonville, the father of Romantic ballet; Christopher Wheeldon, one of the most sought-after choreographers of our time; Paul Mejia, a leader in the modern vision for ballet; and Marius Petipa, the pinnacle of classical ballet. The production will have performances on Friday and Saturday at Moody Performance Hall.

Dallas Symphony Orchestra presents "¡Bailamos! A Night of Latin Music"
Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra will present a night of sultry Latin music, featuring tango classics and ballads. Edna Vázquez will spread her message of light, love and cultural healing. Argentine bandoneón artist Héctor Del Curto will perform music by the iconic Astor Piazzolla and Carlos Gardel, including the famous “Por Una Cabeza.” Argentine master dancers Celina Rotundo and Hugo Patyn will perform the tango alongside the music. There will be three performances through Sunday at Meyerson Symphony Center.

    Pegasus Theatre presents Death/Take:1!
After getting trapped on a cruise liner with Harry and Nigel, Lt. Foster and his friends end up in Egypt. Inside the pyramid the intrepid trio has entered, an action-adventure movie is being shot. The hapless film director, the famous action-adventure star, and his leading lady are being bullied by the all-powerful screenwriter. With tension thick in the air, it isn’t long before someone snaps and someone eats a lead sandwich. Harry, Nigel, and Foster have to solve this nefarious crime before the killer strikes again. The production runs through May 24 at Bath House Cultural Center.

Ochre House Theater presents Moving Creatures
Moving Creatures is a politically charged satire about an evil and intolerable oligarch, Baron Leopold Verdugo, and his four monstrous creations. The Baron is a soured, bloated old goat who lords over a once rich and beautiful region that is now a wasteland due to the Baron’s greediness. The monsters were once beautiful, successful women that fell victim to the Baron’s insatiable desire to kill, destroy, and rebuild in his own image. The production runs through May 24 at Ochre House Theater.

    Saturday, May 10

Commemorative Air Force presents Warbird Weekend
Warbird Weekend takes visitors back in time to see vintage aircraft and vehicles up close. There will be a variety of egendary aircraft on display, along with a vintage car show, and hands-on activities including panels, model airplanes, flight areas, food trucks, and more. The event takes place on Saturday and Sunday at Henry B. Tippie National Aviation Education Center.

City of Garland presents Asian American Heritage Festival
At the City of Garland's 3rd Annual Asian American Heritage Festival, visitors can enjoy cultural performances from countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, and more. Alton Brown Live: Last Bite
Alton Brown comes to town as part of his Last Bite tour. The famed foodist will reflect on his decades in food media, present several of his favorite culinary mega-hacks, and sing some of his funny food songs as part of the culinary variety show. The event takes place at Texas Trust CU Theatre at Grand Prairie.

Hee Yun Kim presents Strings Across the Pacific
Strings Attached Across the Pacific is a concert with a unique ensemble of culturally diverse string instruments, where the two-stringed bowed instruments from the East, the Korean haegeum, and Chinese erhu meet a string quartet from the West. The concert will include the premiere of a 45-minute composition, Calling of the Whales, by composer Hee Yun Kim, which is inspired by the underwater sound of whales and timbral richness of this sextet. The production, part of AT&T Performing Arts Center's Elevator Project, will have performances on Saturday and Sunday at Wyly Theatre.

    Sunday, May 11

Dallas native Demi Lovato will perform at American Airlines Center on May 22.

There aren't a ton of new events happening in and around Dallas this long Memorial Day weekend, but the relatively short list packs a punch. That includes the PGA Tour's annual visit to the area, four concerts from big-name artists, two local theater productions, a fun fundraiser, a big horror movie convention, a festival, championship rodeo, a blockbuster film in concert, and a 30th anniversary celebration of a classic horror movie.

Below are the best ways to spend your free time this weekend. If you want more options, check out our calendar for an even longer list of the city's best events. And, here's a bonus: Many Dallas restaurants are extending weekend brunch into the Monday holiday; find that list here.

    Thursday, May 21

    The CJ Cup Byron Nelson
The CJ Cup Byron Nelson is the PGA Tour's annual stop in the Dallas area, featuring some of the best pro golfers in the world. Participants include defending champion and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Si Woo Kim, Jordan Spieth, Nicolai Højgaard, and more. The tournament takes place through Sunday at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney.

    Jason Isbell in concert
After releasing multiple critically-acclaimed albums, appearing in Killers of the Flower Moon, and touring the world with his band, the 400 Unit, Jason Isbell began 2025 with a change of pace. A solo record. Simply Isbell and his voice and an acoustic guitar, an all-mahogany 1940 Martin 0-17. He'll play the second of two concerts at Winspear Opera House in support of his 2025 album, Foxes in the Snow.

WaterTower Theatre presents Always... Patsy Cline
Always…Patsy Cline celebrates one of the most popular female country singers in recording history. Cline’s legendary voice and meteoric rise to stardom captivated America, and this loving tribute is told through the eyes of her biggest fan - and unlikely friend - Louise Seger. The stage comes alive with Cline’s greatest hits, including “Crazy,” “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “I Fall to Pieces,” and more. The production runs through May 31 at The Addison Performing Arts Centre in Addison.

    Friday, May 22

Dallas CASA presents Parade of Playhouses
The annual Parade of Playhouses features a colorful display of imaginative, one-of-a-kind children’s playhouses designed and built by architects, builders, local companies and talented community members. The playhouses are free to view; for a chance to win one, guests can purchase raffle tickets, which are sold both onsite at NorthPark Center and online. The fundraiser for Dallas CASA takes place through June 7.

    Texas Frightmare Weekend
The 2026 edition of Texas Frightmare Weekend, a horror convention that celebrates all aspects of genre films, will tilt toward celebrating the 30th anniversary of the original Scream, featuring appearances by stars David Arquette, Ghostface voice Roger L. Jackson, Jamie Kennedy, Matthew Lillard, and Skeet Ulrich. Other celebrities will include Tobin Bell, Warwick Davis, Gina Gershon, McKenna Grace, Dina Meyer, Tom Savini, Mira Sorvino, Steve-O, Leigh Whannell, Billy Zane, and more. The event takes place through Sunday at Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas.

    The American Rodeo Championship Weekend
The American Rodeo Championship Weekend merges high-stakes rodeo action with performances from some of music's biggest stars, offering a blend of sport and entertainment. Fans can cheer on both rodeo’s reigning champions as well as underdog "Contenders" who are chasing life-changing payouts. Music performers will include Midland and Chris Young. The event takes place on Friday and Saturday at Globe Life Field in Arlington.

Dallas Symphony Orchestra presents Top Gun: Maverick in Concert
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos, will play Hans Zimmer's score for the blockbuster film Top Gun: Maverick live while the movie plays on a big screen. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot. When he finds himself training a detachment of TOPGUN graduates for a specialized mission, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of Maverick’s late friend, Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” There will be three performances through Sunday at Meyerson Symphony Center, before DSO moves to Flag Pole Hill on Monday for the annual Memorial Day Parks Concert.

Pocket Sandwich Theatre presents Home, I'm Darling
Home, I’m Darling is an Olivier Award-winning play full of big skirts, big hair, and even bigger questions. How can we cope with the pressures of modern life? Or do we have to? It follows Judy as she lives the ultimate vintage dream: tea parties, aprons, and spotless floors … until modern life crashes the perfect picture. The production runs through June 20 at Pocket Sandwich Theatre in Carrollton.

    Demi Lovato in concert
Pop star Demi Lovato is on the road for the first time in four years with her It’s Not That Deep Tour, in support of her 2025 album of the same name. The Dallas native, who got her start in show business by appearing on Barney & Friends, has maintained a consistent popularity over her 18-year music career, with each of her nine albums making the top 10 on the Billboard 200. She'll perform at American Airlines Center.

    Saturday, May 23

    Pitbull in concert
The name of singer/rapper Pitbull's current tour is I'm Back, but the truth is the Latin superstar has never gone away since he released his debut album in 2004. His 13 albums have consistently come out every two years or so, and his tours (whether solo or co-headlining) have come almost as often. Pitbull will perform at Dos Equis Pavilion in support of his 2025 collaborative album, Underdogs, joined by special guest Lil Jon.

    Sunday, May 24

    mgk in concert
mgk, the rapper/singer formerly known as Machine Gun Kelly, has been doing a lot of soul-searching in the 2020s, moving from a pure rap sound to incorporating rock, pop, and punk into his songs. He also officially changed his stage name in 2024, feeling that it no longer fit him. He'll play at Dos Equis Pavilion in support of his 2025 album, Lost Americana, joined by special guest Wiz Khalifa.

Texas Theatre presents Scream with Live Commentary
As part of Texas Frightmare Weekend, Texas Theatre will present a cinematic celebration of Scream, with a special 30th anniversary screening featuring the first-ever live “killer” commentary with stars Matthew Lillard & Skeet Ulrich. Billy Loomis & Stu Macher themselves will sit in on the screening, watch it with the audience, and provide commentary over the movie, sharing behind-the-scenes stories, never-before-heard anecdotes, and other surprises.
