    Here's the Beef

    Ambitious market near downtown Dallas feeds demand for pasture-raised meat

    A grass-fed meat market will come to what has just become Dallas' hottest new street: Ross Avenue. Jon and Wendy Taggart will open a Dallas branch of Burgundy's Local - Grass Fed Meat Market, similar to the market they opened in Fort Worth in 2014.

    The store will offer the same lineup as their Fort Worth outlet with grass-fed beef, pork, chicken, grass-fed lamb, raw milk cheese, pastured eggs, and local honey, all raised and produced in North Central Texas. Their goal is to have the largest selection of sustainable pasture-raised meats in North Texas. Opening is forecast for fall 2016.

    "In the past, our approach to getting our product to town was to home-deliver it to customers," Wendy says. "But we made a decision that we also wanted to do direct retail, instead of going into grocery stores or restaurants. That's what we know, and it keeps us in touch with our customers."

    The shop will go into the same nicely refurbished space at 3300 Ross Ave. as Little Woodrow's, the Houston-based bar.

    "We wanted to be north and east of downtown, and that's right about where we are," Wendy says. "We were grateful to find a place so centrally located with good parking. I felt it was important to be in Dallas. People don't mind driving in from the suburbs to shop, but I'm not sure that's true the other way around."

    The Taggarts have their own USDA inspected butcher shop in Grandview, south of Fort Worth, where they cut and package beef, pork, and lamb. Beef cuts will include tri tip sirloin, sirloin flap, teres major, and beef shank (think osso bucco). Pasture-raised chickens will be dressed out weekly and delivered fresh to the store.

    "In Fort Worth, we've been serving grass-fed beef hamburgers and hot dogs on the weekends, but we won't have a kitchen in the Dallas shop," she says. "I'm hoping to partner with a chef to do some prepared entrees that customers can take home and heat up."

    The Taggarts have been raising grass-fed beef for 16 years.

    "We hope the quality and uniqueness of our offering brings enrichment to the community," she says. "We're farmers and ranchers. I'm hoping I can do some things in the store that portray that."

    3 Dallas eateries make Texas Monthly's 2026 best new restaurants list

    Three Dallas restaurants have earned slots on Texas Monthly's highly anticipated list of 10 best new restaurants for 2026.

    The restaurants and their rankings are:

    Rainbowcat (No. 5), where James Beard finalist Misti Norris is riffing on comfort fare such as chicken tenders, a McMuffin made with porchetta and braised greens, and a dessert inspired by Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

    Mamani (No. 6), the Michelin-starred restaurant that earns its spot for expertly-crafted French and Italian fare and a lengthy wine list.

    Sushi Kozy (No. 10), led by Uchi Dallas alum Paul Ko with chef RJ Yoakum in the kitchen, restored the Texas Monthly author's faith in omakase dining, she says.

    Texas Monthly knows what's up. All three restaurants or chefs are nominees for 2026 CultureMap Tastemaker Awards. Poor Fort Worth, however, was excluded from the list entirely.

    Published Monday, March 2, the Texas Monthly list is open to restaurants that opened between December 1, 2024 and October 31, 2025.

    Notably, it’s the first edition of the list written by Paula Forbes, who succeeded veteran writer Pat Sharpe last year. She writes that that 2025 was “a lackluster one for Texas restaurants. . . Restaurant experiences that feel truly worth it, that have the power to wow, are hard to come by. But they’re out there,” she continues.

    Forbes found those “worth it” experiences at restaurants in Houston, Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, and Paris, a small town in far northeast Texas near the Oklahoma border. Once again, Houston led the way with four spots. They are:

    • Agnes and Sherman, an Asian American diner in the Heights (No. 1)
    • Zaranda, a California-inspired Mexican restaurant in downtown (No. 3)
    • Di An Pho, a Vietnamese restaurant in Chinatown (No. 7)
    • Latuli, chef Bryan Caswell’s eclectic neighborhood restaurant in Memorial (No. 9)

    Austin’s sole representative is Fish Shop (No. 4), which serves West Coast-inspired seafood such as a Dungeness crab cocktail and halibut crudo alongside Gulf Coast-style fare such as well-sourced oysters.

    San Antonio’s Petit Coquin (No. 8) is Forbes’ “favorite” of the three French restaurants on the list thank to its “streamlined prix fixe menu and laissez-faire atmosphere,” she writes. Diners are encouraged to try dishes such as country pâté, steak au poivre, and rice pudding.

    BonFire (No. 2), a French restaurant in Paris, Texas, has Houston ties. Chef Patten Sommers spent the early part of his career in the Bayou City, working at restaurants such as Triniti, Ciao Bello, and Brenner’s on the Bayou.
