The opening of a new Half Price Books, which has 126 locations across the country and 20 in Dallas-Fort Worth, wouldn't normally be big news, but it is noteworthy when it joins one of the hottest shopping centers in the area right now.
Half Price Books in Richardson has moved from its old location at 2100 Alamo Rd., where it had been since 1988, to the Richardson Heights Shopping Center at 100 S. Central Expy. That's the same center that's been rejuvenated since Alamo Drafthouse took over an old Pep Boys location there in August 2013.
Before Alamo opened there, Richardson Heights was threatening to become an afterthought in the city. It's now increasingly a go-to destination, as Half Price Books joins Haystack Burgers, Taco Joint and the new Tasty Tails Cajun restaurant as upgrades to the 1950s-era shopping center.
The growing excitement around the center was the primary reason the company decided to move its Richardson location. Aside from having to go a couple of exits further south, customers need not fear that there will be significant changes, as the store is the same size as the previous location and promises to be easier to navigate.
To celebrate the grand opening, Half Price Books is giving away tote bags and $5 gift cards to the first 100 people in line each day through Sunday, March 1; one lucky person will win a $100 gift card. Also, customers can sign up in the store to win a $500 gift card.
In less happy bookstore news, Lucky Dog Books in Oak Cliff is being forced to shut its doors after its landlord rented the space to another business. The owners are looking into other close-by options but don't yet know if they will be able to continue elsewhere.
Its final day of business at the current location is April 1.
The new Richardson location is the same size as the old location and promises to be easier to navigate.
