    This Week's Hot Headlines

Backyard robins soar in this week's 5 most popular Dallas stories

    Stephanie Allmon Merry
    Feb 27, 2021 | 10:00 am

Editor's note: A lot happened this week, so here's your chance to get caught up. Read on for the week's most popular headlines.

    1. Dallas-Fort Worth is seeing flocks of robins all over their backyards. Amid wintry weather, power outages, water issues, and bursting pipes, Dallas-Fort Worth is enjoying at least one ray of sunshine: in the form of a massive influx of American robins. Robins regularly migrate to the South every winter, but in 2021, they've become a spectacular presence, with swarms of robins swooping in and hanging out, everywhere from the courtyards of inner-city lofts to the postage-stamp front yards of the suburbs.

    2. 7 Dallas eateries land on Texas Monthly's best new restaurants list. The annual ranking of best new restaurants by Texas Monthly looks a little different this year. Instead of the usual list of 10 establishments, it focuses on favorite takeout dishes and drinks from across the Lone Star State, along with spotlighting three of the year's most exciting new openings. Here were the Dallas-Fort Worth dishes that made the list.

    3. This Dallas neighbor clocks in as one of hardest-working U.S. cities. A number of giant employers — including ExxonMobil, Fluor, Kimberly-Clark, Michaels, and NEC Corp. of America — call Irving home. Irving appears to be a giant when it comes to hard-working people, too. A study released February 22 by personal finance website WalletHub ranks Irving the fifth-hardest-working city in the U.S.

    4. Hutchins BBQ in Frisco now sells Texas Twinkies to anyone who wants them. Texas Twinkies are a signature dish at Hutchins BBQ, the craft barbecue concept founded by Roy Hutchins in 1978. Until now they've been accessible only to those in the DFW area who want to drive to one of their two locations. But due to the magic of online shopping, they're now available to anyone in the entire U.S.

    5. Dallas' popular Cane Rosso pizza lines up new location near Richardson. Dallas' most popular pizza chain is getting ready to win over a new neighborhood: Cane Rosso, the Neapolitan-style pizzeria concept founded by Jay Jerrier, is opening a location at Hillcrest Village, the new development at 6959 Arapaho Rd. in Dallas, east of Addison and west of Richardson.

This is the fifth-hardest-working city in the U.S.

British pub with hi-tech darts to open in former Sherlock's in Addison

    Flight Club, coming to Addison

Darts are the thing at a new venue coming to Addison: Called Flight Club, it's a restaurant-bar-pub featuring a high-tech take on darts, opening at the Village on the Parkway, at 5100 Belt Line Rd. #776, in early 2026. It'll take over the former Sherlock's Pub, which closed in 2023.

Flight Club was founded in London in 2015 with a goal to revive the revered pub pastime and bring it into the 21st century. They use proprietary "Social Darts" technology that can do automatic scoring for groups of up to 375 people.

They opened their first Flight Club in the U.S. in Chicago, and there are now nine U.S. locations — in Boston, Houston, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Denver, Washington, D.C., St. Louis, and Philadelphia — plus three more in the works in Cincinnati, Seattle, and New York. Addison will be the 13th.

It's from State of Play Hospitality, a rapidly growing international operator of tech-enabled social entertainment concepts, mostly in the U.S. and UK, such as Bounce and Hijingo, all of which combine immersive environments, food and beverage, and engaging gameplay.

Flight Club's design evokes a 19th-century London pub with whimsical Victorian-era fairground touches. The Addison location will follow that aesthetic but also will incorporate locally inspired design touches. (Dear sirs, please, no longhorns or cowboy hats.)

According to a rlease, the venue will span 8,000 square feet and will feature 12 private and semi-private playing areas, known as "oches." They encourage reservations in groups of six or more, and are 21+ daily after 6 pm and all day Saturday. Rates at the Chicago venue are $15 to $17 per person for 90 minutes of gameplay.

But there's no fee to have a drink and a bite. The menu has lots of shareables — dips, tacos, sliders, wings, flatbreads, skewers, plus an appealing Mezze platter with grilled halloumi cheese, falafel, carrots, cucumbers, red pepper hummus, tzatziki, and pita bread, $49 serves four.

Desserts include churros, s'mores, and cotton candy, and there are craft cocktails such as the High Tea Sour with Empress gin, earl grey tea, elderflower, lemon, and egg white, priced from $15-$18. There's also brunch with cocktails, "bottomless" flatbreads, and avocado toast.

Addison's director of economic development Wayne Emerson gives a nod to the history of the space.

"Flight Club will breathe new life into the old Sherlock's spot at Village on the Parkway, and that corner holds a lot of great memories for folks," Emerson says. "Now it'll be the place for an after-work game of darts or a corporate team-building event. Village on Parkway has grown into North Dallas' entertainment hub, and we're glad to welcome Flight Club to Addison."

Village on the Parkway is becoming quite the entertainment center with Sidecar Social, Puttshack, and high-tech batting venue Batbox coming this summer — a reality that State of Play Hospitality CEO Toby Harris acknowledges.

"Addison has developed into a vibrant destination for guests who appreciate great food, drinks, and experiences, which makes it a perfect fit for Flight Club," Harris says. "As well as introducing Social Darts, we're very excited to bring our exceptional culinary and cocktail program to the Dallas metro, and to bring people together to have some fun and friendly competition."
