    City News Roundup

Fair Park's future fires up debate and more city news around Dallas this week

    Teresa Gubbins
    Mar 28, 2015 | 11:03 am

The Dallas mayoral contest got a little less crazy this week with the arrest of one candidate. Meanwhile, endorsements for the upcoming May 9 election are starting to roll in. And, yay, we finally got to see the new streetcar that'll run between downtown and Oak Cliff.

Here are some of the things that happened in Dallas this week:

    Reimagine this
We're heavily into "reimagining," with groups such as Reimagine Dallas (focused on Dallas schools) and Reimagine DART (dedicated to streamlining DART bus routes). But no reimagining has raised hackles like Reimagine Fair Park, a group that hopes to revitalize the park with more green space and year-round use. Fair Park is owned by the City of Dallas but leased to the State Fair of Texas, which runs for three weeks a year.

A plan devised by urban designer Antonio Di Mambro relegates the State Fair to a smaller footprint: 84 acres instead of 277. There's a nice video explaining their position. Trying to make better use of the park seems like a reasonable goal, but not to the State Fair of Texas, whose response was a barely veiled threat to take Big Tex and their stinking fair elsewhere. Rude!

    Sign of the devil
Richard Sheridan, a colorful Dallas citizen and chronic user of the open-mic at city council meetings, was arrested for painting "666" on a number of Dallas buildings in June 2014. Sheridan, who has run for office a number of times, is currently running for mayor against Mike Rawlings and Marcos Ronquillo.

At a press conference, police said that the charges were state jail felonies but could be upgraded if they can be connected to Sheridan's stance against gay marriage, which you can see on his Facebook page, with posts such as "Who wants to stop the GAY MARRIAGE ATTACK ON OUR CHRISTIAN NATION?"

This should reduce the crazy at the mayoral forum taking place at Belo Mansion on March 31, as it appears he has been removed.

    Endorsements
Dallas Green Alliance issued its list of endorsements for the city council, to whom it will contribute at least $15,000. Their endorsements cover only those seats that are contested and include the following:

    • District 3: Wini Cannon
    • District 4: Carolyn Arnold
    • District 5: Sherry Cordova
    • District 7: Hasani Burton
    • District 8: Eric Williams
    • District 9: Mark Clayton
    • District 10: James White
    • Mayor: Marcos Ronquillo

The Stonewall Democrats of Dallas also released their list of candidates, as follows:

    • District 1 : Scott Griggs
    • District 2 : Adam Medrano
    • District 3 : Joe Tave
    • District 5 : Sherry Cordova
    • District 6 : Monica Alonzo
    • District 7 : Hasani Burton
    • District 8 : No Endorsement
    • District 9 : Mark Clayton
    • District 10 : James White
    • District 14 : Philip Kingston
    • Mayor: Marcos Ronquillo

According to the group, no candidates from Districts 4, 12 or 13 chose to seek their endorsement. They also gave a nod to Lee Kleinman from District 11, for his work with the LGBT community. "However due to the restrictions in our by-laws, he is ineligible to receive an endorsement from Stonewall Democrats. Nonetheless, we do want to acknowledge his efforts and assistance on city council."

    The train
The Dallas-Oak Cliff Streetcar was unveiled by DART, and it's a sleek machine. Built by Brookville Equipment Corp., it will be the first streetcar in the United States that operates on wireless traction power. According to DART spokesman Morgan Lyons, the vehicle will be powered by catenary on surface streets, but it will operate with an ESS (energy storage system) as it crosses the Houston Street Viaduct. The service will run from downtown to North Oak Cliff beginning April 13.

New streetcar from downtown Dallas to Oak Cliff is scheduled to begin running on April 13.

    income news

Here is how Texans' income compares to the rest of the U.S. in 2025

Hardworking Texans are making less money per year than the national median, a new WalletHub study has revealed.

The just-released report, "States Where People Have the Highest Income," found Texas workers are making a median annual income of $73,718, compared to the national median of $81,000 per year.

The study examined the average annual income of the top five percent, the average income of the bottom 20 percent, and the median income for all residents in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Income was adjusted for the cost of living.

Texas ranked 11th in the study's rankings of states where residents have the highest incomes, moving up one spot from its 2024 ranking. Virginia claimed the No. 1 spot, followed by New Jersey (No. 2) and New York (No. 3).

Based on WalletHub's findings, the top five percent of Texans are making more than $504,000 per year. Meanwhile, the bottom 20 percent of Texas residents are making only $17,461 annually.

In a major city like Dallas, income disparities may appear to be even wider than other Texas cities. Earning a "comfortable" wage in Dallas now costs $4,000 more than it did last year, and being a middle-class earner means making a minimum of $46,743 a year and as much as $140,242. Making a six-figure salary doesn't even go as far as it used to.

Yet Dallas still ranks among the top 10 wealthiest cities in America with 16 billionaires and 135 multi-millionaires calling the city home. Even Dallas' suburbs are attracting more high-income households than many other U.S. cities.

"The highest-earning 10 percent of individuals in the United States earn over 12 times more than those in the lowest-earning 10 percent, based on the latest Census data," said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. "By measuring the income of various percentiles against a state's median income, we can better identify where income disparities are more prevalent, which could help us better understand why residents of certain states struggle more to make ends meet."

The top 10 states with residents earning the highest income are:

    • No. 1 – Virginia
    • No. 2 – New Jersey
    • No. 3 – New York
    • No. 4 – Connecticut
    • No. 5 – Washington
    • No. 6 – Utah
    • No. 7 – Minnesota
    • No. 8 – Colorado
    • No. 9 – Illinois
    • No. 10 – Massachusetts
