Netflix your neck with Tie Society, the menswear-on-demand website
The necktie is an easy way for a man to add a spark of style, but the shine can wear off quickly if you’re wearing the same three ties on repeat. However, if you try to diversify too much, you’re left with a plethora of ties that cost anywhere from $30 to $200 each and might only get worn once or twice a year.
So what’s a guy to do?
Well, Tie Society wants to help men attempting to be fashionable on a budget — or those with commitment issues — with a Netflix-like online service for men’s accessories. For a flat monthly fee, users can rent ties, cufflinks, tie bars and pocket squares.
Tie Society stocks brands like Brooks Brothers, Burberry and Hermès and offers flexible monthly plans and free shipping.
Tie Society stocks brands like Brooks Brothers, Burberry and Hermès and offers flexible monthly plans, ranging from one item up to 10, which can be kept as long or as little as the customer needs. Like Netflix, shipping is free, and the turnaround is quick — one to three days. Monthly membership plans start at $10.95 and go up to $49.95 for the 10-item option.
Ladies also have these types of on-demand, rent-and-return services, including Rent the Runway and Texas-based New for the Night.
Fans of the FX show The League might recognize Tie Society as Taco’s harebrained “Neckflix” business plan from “The Light of Genesis” episode. But we’re told that Tie Society claims The League was inspired by it, not the other way around.
Perhaps not surprisingly, TieTry has the same business model. But that online service only does ties, and it is more expensive, so it will not be mentioned again.
Tie Society has stats on each tie — material, pattern and width — and recommends the outfit that would best complement the tie you’ve selected. For the Ben Sherman city plaid slim silk tie, the company recommends that you “take the opportunity to sport your favorite denim jacket and a white oxford.”
You totally read our minds on that, Tie Society.
Because you can also order cufflinks, tie bars and pocket squares, you can constantly mix and match, meaning your suits may rotate only three or four times, but you’ll never wear the same outfit twice.
If it all sounds simple, that’s because it is. You can browse the website — filtering by designer, pattern, color, material and width — and personalize your queue of ties for, say, upcoming events.
The fact that you can return it when you’re done means there’s little risk in selecting a bright red paisley from Bruno Piattelli, other than being ready for a conversation with everyone you meet.
