The Dapper Designer
NY fashion darling Timo Weiland talks Piermarini, Dallas style and go-to looks
Dapper young designer Timo Weiland, dubbed “the darling of New York fashion people,” is coming to Dallas May 11 for a trunk show at Piermarini Boutique. Thanks to enterprising young owner John Piermarini — known for bringing emerging lines to his Snider Plaza shop — Dallasites can get an exclusive dose of Weiland’s modern country-chic collection.
Weiland, creative director of the brand that bears his name, majored in economics, Spanish lit and business management at Vanderbilt before he decided to go into fashion. And style enthusiasts everywhere are delighted he did. His line has been praised for its “straightforward sense of happiness,” which is reflected in the summer party dresses carried by Piermarini. But, looking forward to fall 2013, the Weiland girl is getting tougher.
“I think that Dallas men and women exemplify casual luxury.” — Timo Weiland
Although Weiland and design director Alan Eckstein don’t aim to be celebrity favorites, their designs have been spotted on Penn Badgley, Carly Rae Jepsen, Elijah Wood, Jessica Szohr and Kelly Osbourne.
If you can’t make it to the store on Saturday, perhaps you can catch this curly-headed chap at the W Dallas Victory hotel bar, sipping on a Manhattan or old fashioned. In advance of his Dallas visit, we chatted with Weiland about what’s in his closet and what he thinks about Dallas style.
CultureMap: What are your thoughts on the Dallas fashion scene?
Timo Weiland: I think that Dallas men and women exemplify casual luxury. Attire for cocktails on a lush terrace, moving inside for a more formal dinner and festivities after — versatility is key!
CM: As a young designer in the fashion world, what do you think of John Piermarini?
TW: I admire John a great deal for chasing his dream at such an early age. He is far younger than I. It is amazing that he has such clarity of drive [and] purpose.
CM: Designers do you admire?
TW: Marc Jacobs, Dries van Noten, Alber Elbaz and Diane von Furstenburg.
CM: What should every man have in his closet?
TW: Black leather jacket, fitted jeans, simple white tee.
CM: Your favorite summer trends?
TW: Striped tees, navy linen blazers and loafers without socks.
CM: What's your go-to look?
TW: Chambray button-down, black denim trouser, cognac leather jacket.
