Austin-based Whole Earth Provision Co. opened its largest store yet on June 1 in the shiny suburb of Southlake at 321 State St., with more functional and inspirational goods than its sister stores in all departments — including menswear, womenswear, childrenswear, travel gear, toys and gifts.
"We found Southlake's Town Square concept and the energy it creates very appealing," says Whole Earth spokesperson Johanna Schmidt. "So we jumped at the chance to join the community."
Schmidt says that opening in Southlake was simply a matter of opportunity, and there are currently no other plans to expand throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The first Whole Earth Provision Co. opened 43 years ago, next to the University of Texas at Austin campus.
"It was founded on principles of the Whole Earth catalog, which encouraged 'individuals to conduct their own education, find their own inspiration, shape their own environment and share the adventure with whoever is interested,'" says merchandise manager Kathy McCarley-Peeples.
"We believe people will make the best choices for themselves, their community and planet given the information and opportunity."
Today, the outdoorsy shop has nine locales throughout the Lone Star State, including the most recent addition in Southlake. "Although this is the largest location to date, it is only a little bigger then our San Antonio location," Schmidt says.
We suggest giving yourself at least an hour to get through the entire store: Whole Earth Southlake is 20,000 square feet of rugged goodness. The store is open Monday-Saturday, 10 am-8 pm, and Sunday, noon-6 pm.
