Angel Sanchez gets back to his roots with colorful spring 2016 collection
After years of creating toned-down clothing with a minimal architectural look, Angel Sanchez has returned to his Latin roots.
The Venezuelan-born designer aims at a different direction for spring 2016 with a wildly colorful collection featuring polka dot textiles, hand-cut leather flowers, and stylized hibiscus prints.
After opening with a white silk dress belted at the waist, Sanchez featured a vibrant palette of citrus-green, lemon yellow, fuchsia, and orange in dresses that flare out at the waist or are cut close to the body, sleeveless jumpsuits with tapered legs — there a lots of jumpsuits in this collection, including one with flower appliqués on an illusion sleeve — and voluminous evening gowns.
Sanchez calls the collection “Tropical Couture,” and it certainly has a verdant feeling.
However, he hasn't gone away from this architectural roots entirely. Even with all the color and embellishment, including futuristic flower-adorned Plexiglass breastplates, jeweled belts, and sparkly flowers, the cut of many looks retains the architectural feel, with V-neck cutouts, draped fabric, and asymmetrical bodices. And some of his strongest pieces are in stark black or white, which really stand out amid the riot of color.
Sanchez also exhibits a playful attitude with accessories, pairing floral adorned shoes in neon shades with contrasting garments — for example, sunshine yellow shoes with a strapless black gown or bright red pumps with a drop-waist dress in lime green.
Dallasites should keep an eye on Neiman Marcus for the arrival of Sanchez's latest collection.
