It's getting cold up in Allen with new frozen ice cream pop shop
A new ice cream shop selling frozen pops has opened way up north of Dallas in Allen, at Watters Creek at Montgomery Farms. Called Frios Gourmet Pops, it's an Alabama chain featuring frozen pops made daily in unique fruit- or cream-based flavors.
Owner Khristine Wilson says they're excited to make their debut in Allen, and will offer something a little extra beyond the brick-and-mortar store.
"In addition to selling our pops in the store, we'll also have a cart out on The Green for all the Concerts by the Creek," she says.
Frios was founded in 2013 as a single push cart in downtown Gadsden, Alabama. Today, the company makes tens of thousands of gourmet pops a day for stores across the United States.
The flavors are developed by a team of foodies, chemistry geeks, and organic farmers.
There are basics such as strawberry and chocolate. There are refreshing fruity blends such as strawberry mango, pomegranate grapefruit, and blackberry ginger lemonade.
There are rich decadent flavors like coconut and caramel sea salt. And there are unique flavors such as nutter butter, fruity pebbles, and Key lime pie.
For Starbucks fans, there's a pumpkin spice latte, and who could resist the one called "Coffee & Donuts." Nobody with any sense, that's who.
Their find-us page shows that there are 41 locations across the Southeast, from Alabama to Mississippi to Tennessee to Florida. There are currently six outlets in Texas, four of which are in the Houston area. Let's hear it for North Texas.
Watters Creek marketing director Debra Martinez notes in a release that frozen treats are popular in the summer.
"Guests can take a break from shopping and easily grab a Frios Gourmet Pop, relax on one of our benches, and enjoy the scenery in between shopping at our fantastic retailers," Martinez says.
Watters Creek has no shortage of sweet options, including Frogg Coffee Bar & Creperie, Menchie's Frozen Yogurt, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Paciugo Gelato, and Sublime Chocolate Bar.
But until now there were no pops. That all changed on May 10, when Frios — a variant on the Spanish word for "cold" — arrived.
