This Week In Gluttony

Bountiful craft beer tops best food and drink events in Dallas

Jonathan Rienstra
Aug 20, 2013 | 6:00 am

It’s a beer-centric week in gluttony with a choice of a tap takeover at Goodfriend, a beer dinner at Cook Hall or a beer fest in the Arts District. Beyond that, though, there’s a cheese class at Scardello with a name that’s … smart, and a fundraiser at Stratos for a local musician.

So many options, so little time. Well, actually, they’re all on different days so you could feasibly make it all of them. We’re not saying, we’re just saying.

Wednesday, August 21
2nd Annual Large and Hard Class at Scardello Artisan Cheese

Scardello hosts the second annual Large and Hard to honor the late cheese expert Daphne Zepos. The wittily titled class is a take on Zepos’ class of the same name and includes tastings of a handful of high-quality cheeses. Wine will also be served at the function and all profits go toward the Daphne Zepos Teaching Award. The event begins at 7 and is $35 per person. Tickets can be purchased online.

Thursday, August 22
Peticolas Tap Takeover at Goodfriend with Fish Fry Bingo

Peticolas Brewing Company takes over the taps at Goodfriend beginning at 4 pm with beers including Great Scot, Alfred Brown, Rye't On, The Duke, Golden Opportunity, Royal Scandal, Velvet Hammer, and a cask of Golden Opportunity with Centennial. Fish Fry Bingo takes the stage at sunset, which is also when Goodfriend will tap the Duke, a barley wine named after an El Paso drinking buddy.

Friday, August 23
Franconia Beer Dinner at Cook Hall

Cook Hall and Franconia Brewing Company team up for a five-course beer dinner beginning at 7 pm. Pairings include Koelsch paired with east coast oysters with cucumber mignonette, Franconia Wheat with a roasted strawberry and goat cheese salad dressed with aged balsamic vinegar and Franconia Dunkel with spiced rib-eye, crispy potatoes and cherry mustard. Reservations are $55 per person and can be made at 214-397-4111.

Saturday, August 24
Dallas Observer’s 3rd Annual BrewFest

The Dallas Observer presents the 3rd Annual BrewFest in the Dallas Arts District, where people can enjoy samples of more than 150 types of beer from around the globe, all while listening to live music. All tickets include a dozen 2 oz. beer samples, with additional sampling cards available for purchase for $2 at the event. VIP tickets include early entry, liquor samples and catered food.

Sunday, August 25
Nancy "Shaggy" Moore Benefit Event at Stratos Taverna

Stratos Global Greek Taverna hosts a fundraiser to help local musician and former Dallas Morning News writer Nancy “Shaggy” Moore save her family home. The abode in which she cared for her disabled parents for 33 years, is about to be repossessed by the city. The live music showcase runs from 2 to 6 pm and features Jackson Eli, Jenni Mansfield Peal, Nathan John Adamson. The restaurant will donate 100 percent of the profits to help Moore raise enough money to keep her home.

Longtime Dallas restaurant Sevy's Grill to close after nearly 30 years

A longtime Dallas restaurant is closing in 2026: Sevy's Grill, which has been open at 8201 Preston Rd. near Preston Center for nearly 30 years, will close on June 27, 2026.

According to a release from the owners, they're closing due to what appears to be an increase in rent.

"After months of negotiations, we were not able to come to a mutually beneficial agreement for our fourth 10-year lease," the post said.

The restaurant is located in Preston Sherry Plaza, which was acquired in September 2025 by Austin-based Endeavor Real Estate. Somebody gotta foot the bill.

Sevy's says they are looking at other locations.

"Our focus now is to finish these next 6+ months taking care of our guests and staff at the same caring level we built our brand on: Warm, professional service, consistently good food and a comfortable ambiance where the guest is always first," the post says. "First on our list of priorities is taking care of our guests in December and all the wonderful celebrations of family, friends and business groups. We do still have some availability for reservations, including our last New Years Eve at Preston Sherry. Come celebrate with us as the exciting anticipation of a new year for all of us."

"Our second priority will be the search for a new location to continue doing what we love," they said. "We are already reviewing possible sites and will keep everyone updated regularly."

Owned by chef Jim "Sevy" Severson and his wife Amy Severson, the restaurant has long been a neighborhood favorite with a lively bar scene, and was nominated in CultureMap's 2018 Tastemaker Awards for Best Neighborhood Restaurant. They were a frequent choice for winemaker events and are also known for the longevity of their staff.

"Eight team members have been with us all 29+ years, with an average tenure in the kitchen of 15+ years and a Management team that you all know," their post said. "Come support our staff as we celebrate the next 6+ months.Thank you again for your support through all the normal challenges of running a restaurant as well as economic downturns, market bubbles, Y2K, and of course the COVID era. As I tell my family and friends to “enjoy the ride in life”, wow, what an amazing ride it has been for us! And as always, Sevy’s Grill is here for you."
