    This Week in Gluttony

Meat Fight and Thai Street Eats top best food and drink events in Dallas

    Jonathan Rienstra
    Nov 11, 2013 | 5:10 pm

People, this week in gluttony has it all: meat, Thai street food, cupcakes, wine, Tuscany and the Dallas Cowboys. Okay, some of those things aren’t edible, but the fact remains if you want to get out of the house during sweater weather, you have plenty of options.

There’s also the added bonus that all of these events, save for the date night at Sur La Table, involve a philanthropic angle. Good people should eat good food, don’t you think?

It may not be fair to mention Meat Fight, which sold out before most people could hit the buy button online. But you could always hope for a meaty miracle.

    Thursday, November 14

Thai Street Eats hosted by Best Thai Signature
Best Thai Signature in Addison hosts its first Thai Street Eats beginning at 6:30 pm. The event features traditional Thai street foods served from demo tables paired with Natura Organic wines and Chang Thai beer. There is also a tasting table featuring kao mok kai (Southern chicken with curried rice), kanom jeeb (Thai pork and shrimp dumpling) and kapow nau (Thai basil beef). Part of the proceeds goes to the Congenital Heart Surgery Unit at Medical City Children's. Tickets are $25 per person or $40 per couple and can be ordered online.

Cook for a Cause at People’s Last Stand
People’s hosts executive chef Latrecia Green of the soon-to-open cupcakery Smallcakes for a sampling of cupcakes beginning at 7 pm. Guests are invited to try a five-course mini-cupcake tasting paired with a variety of champagnes. All proceeds go to Green’s charity of choice, You Can, and guests receive a gift bag. Tickets are $20 and can be ordered online.

    Friday, November 15

2013 “Taste of Blue” Wine Tasting and Silent Auction
The women of the Kappa Zeta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta host a night of wine and bidding beginning at 8 pm. Guests receive a souvenir wine glass for attending, and proceeds go to Stork’s Nest Charity Fund of Dallas. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. They can be purchased online.

    Saturday, November 16

Festival de Champagne at Pogo’s Wine & Spirits
Pogo's Wine & Spirits hosts the second annual Festival de Champagne from 3 to 5 pm. Guests can sip on thirty different Champagne samples including Dom Perignon, G.H. Mumm, Henriot, Laurent-Perrier, Möet Vintage 2004, Nicolas Feuillatte, Perrier Jouët, Piper Heidsieck, Pol Roger, Roederer, Ruinart, and Veuve Clicquot Vintage 2004. Cheese and fruit accompany the selections. The event is complimentary and open to the public.

Tuscany for Two at Sur La Table
Sur La Table Dallas offers a date-night cooking class that puts you right in Tuscany beginning at 8 pm. The instructor teaches students how to prepare dishes such as pear and arugula salad with pomegranate vinaigrette and balsamic-braised pork with caramelized onions. Spots are $79 per person and can be purchased online.

    Sunday, November 17

    Meat Fight
What started off as a backyard barbecue of sorts has turned into a big-deal (and sold out) fundraiser for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Alice "Cheap Bastard" Laussade serves as the queen of meat for this event, during which the city's top chefs — Brian C. Luscher, Omar Flores, Tiffany Derry, Chad Houser and Jeana Johnson among them — compete for bragging rights to the best brisket, sausage and ribs. Judges include barbecue experts such as Justin Fourton, Jack Perkins and Daniel Vaughn.

    Monday, November 18

Sean Lee’s Night of Stars and Steaks at III Forks
The reigning NFC Defensive Player of the Month may be out a few weeks with a hamstring injury, but the linebacker is pursuing his other passions as he hosts a three-course dinner at III Forks to benefit his charity, Legends for Literacy. The event includes drinks, raffle, live and silent auctions, and more. Proceeds benefit Legends for Literacy, which gives new technology to area inner-city after-school programs. Cocktails begin at 7 pm; dinner starts at 7:30. Reservations are $200 and can be made at 615-535-3140.

You can't get into Meat Fight on November 17. But don't you wish you could?

Starry new restaurant Astra debuts in Dallas Arts District hotel

A new restaurant is opening in the Dallas Arts District’s sophisticated HALL Arts Hotel: Called Astra Kitchen + Lounge, it will replace the Napa-inspired eatery Ellie’s, which opened in 2019 and quietly shuttered in 2025.

According to a release, Astra will open Wednesday, March 4.

The space has been revamped to match its celestial new name, which means "stars" in Latin. It will boast a more “art-centric” aesthetic, complete with an “immersive light installation” from New York artist Spencer Finch, in which 360 dangling bulbs are hung in the space to “represent the molecular structure of an asteroid,” according to the artist.

“ASTRA is really about bringing people together,” says HALL Group CEO Craig Hall in the release. “It’s a place to enjoy great food, great wine, and great conversation surrounded by art and design that feels welcoming, not intimidating. That’s always been at the heart of HALL Arts Hotel.”

Executive chef Miguel Antonio will lead the kitchen. Formerly of Dallas stalwarts like Fearing’s and Five Sixty by Wolfgang Puck, he most recently helmed the nearby JW Steakhouse, located inside the JW Marriott Dallas. Diners can expect a menu of “classic Americana cuisine” that ranges from three different types of Wellington — including a vegetarian option — to roasted prime rib and pressed sushi.

Diners will be able to pair those entrees with wines from the hotel’s extensive list, including its signature HALL wine that is offered to all guests upon check-in, plus a line-up of classic cocktails that includes Astra’s riff on an espresso martini. Those libations will be on happy hour from 4-6 weekdays, according to the restaurant’s website.

Astra is set to open its doors on March 4 at the hotel, 1717 Leonard St. The restaurant will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner service during the week, along with weekend brunch.
