Hypnotic Donuts closes East Dallas location after 12 years

Hypnotic Donuts
A longtime doughnut destination in Dallas is no more: Hypnotic Donuts closed its shop at 9007 Garland Rd. in the White Rock Shopping Center, after 12 years.
The business posted a statement on the closure, without giving a reason. Their voicemail already says the shop is closed.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the closing of Hypnotic Donuts,” they shared in a post on May 20. “After 12 years of serving the best donuts and chicken biscuits in Dallas, it is time to retire.”
Hypnotic Donuts was founded by couple James and Amy St. Peter, who began selling doughnuts out of the back of their car, then partnered with a pizzeria to sell doughnuts during the day before the pizzeria opened for its night shift.
They finally opened a brick-and-mortar of their own on Garland Road, taking over a former Donut Palace, in 2012.
They were the first designer-style doughnut shop in Dallas — the first to top their doughnuts with unusual items like bacon and candy, as well as vegan options.
Doughnut flavors had names that reflected their original hippie vibe such as Give a Peach a Chance, a vanilla cake doughnut with peach jam and raspberry drizzle; and Peace’stachio, a vanilla cake donut in brown butter glaze, topped with pistachios. They also offered kolaches, traditional glazed doughnuts, cake doughnuts, fritters, and biscuits.
They later sold the shop to Bruce Labona in 2019. In addition to doughnuts, the shop had become active in the community hosting events such as bingo, 5K runs, and charity events.
In the years since Hypnotic opened, Dallas has seen a number of shops taking doughnuts to higher levels including Voodoo Doughnuts, the Portland, Oregon chain which opened a location on Greenville Avenue in 2023; The Salty Donut, the Miami-based artisanal chain that opened a location in Bishop Arts in 2020 and a spinoff in downtown Dallas in 2022; and La Rue Doughnuts, the gourmet doughnut shop from acclaimed chef duo Casey and Amy La Rue which opened in Trinity Groves in 2024.
