Every happy hour should start with a toast.

So far, January 2025 has been an eventful month. After the weather this week, who doesn't want a cocktail? This installment of Where to Drink is stocked with happy hours all around town, and has an oyster theme: Three of these happy hours come with oysters. Meanwhile, for those doing Dry January, we have a separate list of all the mocktails being served around Dallas-Fort Worth.

Here's where to drink in Dallas right now:

    Chet's Dallas
Upscale Irish-American restaurant in downtown Dallas' West End just debuted a weekday happy hour that starts early, so you can get a break at lunch. Drink specials feature $4 beers, $5 wine, and $6 wells, and they're offering lunch specials as well, which change daily, from a $7 Cajun chicken sandwich on Monday to fish & chips on Wednesday for $9. Happy hour runs from 11 am-6 pm.

    Eddie V's
Plano steakhouse hosts a happy hour Sunday-Thursday from 4-6:30 pm. Select cocktails are $10 including like The Dapper martini, a spicy margarita, a Bulleit sour, and a Cosmopolitan. Wine by the glass is $9. A menu of happy hour snacks include 2 filet mignon sliders for $11, 2 oysters Rockefeller for $8, lobster bites for $17, and a beet salad with burrata cheese for $16.

    Restaurant Beatrice
Chef-owned Cajun-Creole restaurant in Bishop Arts features a new happy hour Tuesday-Friday from 5-6 pm with half price oysters and drink specials. Beverage options include a Cranberry Cosmo, a sophisticated spritz, an old-fashioned, and a cabernet by Pasa D'Oro, all priced at $11.11; plus $4 draft Miller Lite. Oysters can be ordered raw or chargrilled.

    Rex's Seafood
Seafood restaurant on Northwest Highway known for its fried oysters and seafood has just introduced a new happy hour. They call it "Martini & 3": It features a martini with choice of gin or vodka and three oysters for $15. (Their oysters are usually $21 for a half dozen, and that does not include a drink.) The special runs Monday-Friday from 3-9 pm.

    Southern Gourmet Kitchen
Southern restaurant in Plano offers Tuesday-Friday happy hour specials. It's all day happy hour Tuesday, and 4-7 pm Wednesday-Friday. Half-price cocktails include margaritas, martinis, Long Island, and old-fashioneds. They also offer discounted wells and beers. Discounted appetizers include fried green tomatoes, Cajun ranch fries, and seasoned fried okra.

Local opening of beloved Dallas chain Steak and Ale gets derailed

The long-in-the-works return of Steak and Ale in Dallas is being shelved for now: The casual steakhouse chain which in its heyday had nearly 300 locations is no longer opening a location it planned for in Grand Prairie.

According to a post from company owner Paul Mangiamele, the restaurant is now a no-go.

"After years of very hard and exhausting work for making the Grand Prairie side by side S&A and Bennigan’s happen, the rug has been yanked out from under us," Mangiamele said in his post.

Often referred to as a pioneer in casual dining, Steak and Ale debuted in 1966, offering an affordable steakhouse experience with rustic Tudor design that included wooden beams and stained glass. In addition to steak and a signature salad bar, the menu featured then-fancy items such as steak Oscar, baby back ribs, and Hawaiian chicken with pineapple teriyaki sauce.

The chain remained a buzzy destination throughout the '70s and '80s, but by 2008, the parent company filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and the remaining locations closed.

In 2023, businessman Paul Mangiamele, chairman and CEO of Legendary Restaurant Brands (which also includes Bennigan’s and Bennigan’s On The Fly, which he has also revived), made a plan to revive the concept that included opening a new Steak and Ale in Burnsville, Minnesota, as well as partnering with a franchisee to open a location in Grand Prairie, side-by-side with a Bennigan's.

The Minnesota location opened in August 2024, but Grand Prairie will not be so lucky, and according to Mangiamele, it's due to the shenanigans of the franchisee.

"For years, we were being told by the developer and owner of the land how he was going to be our franchise partner," Mangiamele says. "He shared with me numerous times how he grew up with the brands and wanted to do his part in honoring Norman Brinker and would be a proud franchise owner. Well, after he finally (3 years later) received his money for selling some of his land, instead of being our franchise partner, he changed his tune, and wanted to instead, sell his land to us!!"

According to Mangiamele, not only did the franchisee try to sell back the land, he tried to make a profit.

"Our special deal was a ‘discounted’ price per foot on the land we’d need," Mangiamele says. "After a few due diligence calls, the discounted ’deal’ price was 20% higher than the comparable prices in the same area!! Simply unbelievable!"

Mangiamele says they are still talking to other interested parties in the greater DFW area and should have more news soon.
