The top 10 restaurant stories Dallasites consumed in 2016

Jennifer Chininis
Dec 23, 2016 | 2:27 pm

Editor's note: Dallasites love to dine out. They like to stay on top of the food trends. But more important: They want to be the first to know it all. Where do they get their intel? From CultureMap dining editor Teresa Gubbins. And so these are the 10 most-read restaurant stories of 2016.

1. West Coast's trendiest ice cream sandwich comes to Dallas in time for summer. Back in May, we learned that the milky bun was coming to Dallas— specifically Lowest Greenville, in the same strip as Ships. Milk + Cream owner Man Ho brought the California treat, which is a cross between a filled doughnut and an ice cream sandwich, with a pastry standing in for the standard cookie.

2. Top 100: The very best restaurants in Dallas. There are lists, and then there is the list to top them all. We painstakingly ranked Dallas' best restaurants from 1 to 100, focusing on a breadth of cuisines and price points. It's a go-to for all Dallas diners. You're welcome.

3. Central Market spills the beans on new Dallas locations. When San Antonio-based H-E-B scooped up several local Sun Fresh Markets, there was hope that Dallas would get its first from the supermarket. Nope. Instead Dallas is getting two more Central Markets — which is just as good, right? At least for the folks living in Uptown or near Midway Road and Northwest Highway.

4. New concept in Uptown puts Dallas in line with major national food trend. In February, it was announced that Dallas was getting its first food hall: in Uptown, in the former Sfuzzi space at the Gables Villa Rossa. It opened in late October, and it was just as we hoped it would be, with stalls from the top independent food purveyors in town, from La Duni to Fireside Pies.

5. Asian pastry shop makes Texas debut next to Dallas' favorite dollar store. In April we learned that 85°C Bakery, a chain from Taiwan, was coming to Carrollton Town Center. Known for affordable and interesting pastries and coffee, the bakery opened in August near Japanese dollar store Daiso. North Texans went nuts for both.

6. Local rock stars dream up chill cocktail lounge for East Dallas' main drag. Garland Road is emerging as a hot zone in Dallas, and the opening of Lounge Here — a bar/restaurant/live music venue from Julie Doyle, singer and manager of Polyphonic Spree, and Tony Barsotti, artist, musician, and furniture designer — is evidence. It's nestled in an unassuming strip of businesses, including Margie's Wig Salon and the Kitchen Recording Studio, and that's part of its charm.

7. Hot ice cream concept meets its match in ideal Dallas neighborhood. Ice cream was a big trend in 2016 (see milky bun above), and Chills 360 is the Dallas version of Thai-style or rolled ice cream. The ice cream liquid base is poured onto a plate set to minus 10 below zero. After it's spread across the plate, it freezes, then gets rolled up. Cute.

8.Japanese supermarket Mitsuwa debuts in hot North Texas foodie turf. In August, we learned that Mitsuwa Marketplace, the largest Japanese supermarket chain in the United States, would open at 100 Legacy Dr. in Plano. Mitsuwa carries a wide variety of Japanese groceries, as well as electric appliances, cosmetics, and other products. This will be the first Mitsuwa in Texas when it opens in spring 2017.

9. Dallas' most famous Tex-Mex family plans latest restaurant in Plano. This summer Plano got the time-tested Tex-Mex of the Cuellar family, in the form of Cuellar's Fajita Ranch, open at US 75 and Parker Lane. It's an offshoot of El Corazon Vintage Tex-Mex, the family's restaurant in Oak Cliff, but with "a little extra this and that," i.e., new dishes.

10. The 10 absolute best barbecue joints in Dallas-Fort Worth. All across Texas, there's increased attention on smoked meat, both on the part of the people doing the smoking and the people doing the eating. DFW has been the fortunate recipient of a big wave of barbecue openings, and this comprises the five best joints in Dallas and the five best in Fort Worth.

'Yellowstone' stars premiere season 5 in Fort Worth ahead of filming in North Texas

Taylor Sheridan and Nicole Sheridan at the Yellowstone season 5 premiere in Fort Worth.

On a chilly fall Sunday evening, the cast and crew of Yellowstone descended on Fort Worth for the hit Paramount TV show's long-awaited season 5 premiere.

Stars and supporters of both Yellowstone and its Fort Worth-shot prequel 1883 - including creator Taylor Sheridan and his wife, Nicole - hit the red carpet (okay, technically it was black) at the Fort Worth Stockyards' Hotel Drover before sitting down to a screening at the Downtown Cowtown at the Isis theater on Sunday, November 13.

The premiere-event was a homecoming for Sheridan, an honorary Fort Worthian who attended Pascal High School and lives on a ranch in Weatherford. It also preceded a day of shooting in the small North Texas town of Venus on Tuesday, November 15, WFAA reported.

Sheridan's Yellowstone chronicles the Dutton family of Montana, led by John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner), who controls the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the U.S. Amid shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds and hard-earned respect, the ranch is in constant conflict with those it borders: an expanding town, an Indian reservation and America’s first national park.

Although Yellowstone's biggest star, Costner, was not in Fort Worth for the premiere, other "Duttons" in attendance included Luke Grimes (Kayce Dutton), Kelsey Asbille (Monica Dutton), Brecken Merrill (Tate Dutton), and Kylie Rogers (young Beth Dutton).

After the screening, guests attended a reception at the Barn at the Hotel Drover, where they were met by a Texas Longhorn and three Drovers from the Fort Worth herd. The reception featured Yellowstone-themed “Blue Montana” and “Dutton Ranch” beverages as signature cocktails.

Country singer Hayes Carll entertained, and a unique “Shop the Scenes” experience allowed attendees to simulate living on the Yellowstone ranch.

Guests were able to wander virtual sets and shop authentic products from the shows. Other fun activities included a custom Wrangler Denim Jacket Station, custom luggage tags with “Yellowstone” signature “Y” branding, a 3D photo booth, a boot shiner and “Yellowstone 1883” Reserve wine tasting.

VIP attendees included cast and crew Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty, Wendy Moniz, Jefferson White, Ian Bohen, Denim Richards, Jen Landon, Piper Perabo, Hassie Harrison, John Emmet Tracy, Ethan Lee, Dawn Olivieri, Kai Caster, Kathryn Kelly, Kyle Silverstein, Eric and Sainty Nelson, Dave Annable, Jake Ream, Buck Taylor, Christian Wassana, and directors Stephen Kay and Christina Voros. Additional notable guests included Craig Cavileer, managing Partner of Stockyards Heritage Development Co. and Hotel Drover; Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Paramount Media Networks; David Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios; and Jenny Wood, president of Bosque Ranch.

The event was presented at the conclusion of the 16th annual Lone Star Film Festival, which screened a variety of narrative feature films, documentaries and short films at various destinations in the Fort Worth Stockyards. Two days earlier at the LSFF Gala, Sheridan had received the 2022 Larry McMurtry Award, the festival's highest honor.

The award, presented by the Lone Star Film Festival and the Fort Worth Film Commission, honors native Texans who have made great contributions to the film, television, and creative industries.

In 2023, Sheridan will receive the state's highest honor for achievement in the arts, a Texas Medal of Arts Award.

Award-winning Dallas vegan chef opens TLC 'tastes like chicken' cafe

TLC Vegan Cafe

If it's chicken-fried, it has to be good.

A new vegan cafe has debuted in Richardson from an award-winning chef. Called TLC Vegan Cafe, it's from vegan chef Troy Gardner, and it opened at 1930 N. Coit Rd. #140 on November 11.

It's in the space previously occupied by Reverie Bakeshop, the vegan and gluten-free bakery, which relocated to 980 Coit Rd. in June. With seating for about 30, TLC will have dine-in service plus a market for sandwiches and other grab-and-go items.

The Cafe is an evolution from TLC Vegan Kitchen, the ghost kitchen concept Gardner founded during the pandemic at Revolving Kitchen in Garland.

TLC Vegan Kitchen was voted D Magazine’s Best Vegan restaurant and won CultureMap's Tastemaker Award in 2021 for Best Ghost Kitchen.

The menu includes Gardner's signature oyster mushrooms, said to taste like chicken, the inspiration for the name TLC, which stands for "Tastes like Chicken."

Other items include:

  • chicken fried steak
  • lasagna with house-made ricotta, mozzarella, & parmesan
  • chocolate lava cake
  • banana foster pudding

Gardner is partnered with Sherry Copeland, owner of Jai Meals, a food service located at the Shops at Willow Bend in Plano serving vegan meals from different chefs for pick-up or home delivery. Copeland wanted a storefront outside of the mall and leased the Richardson spot.

TLC Vegan Café will be among the first locations in the country to offer Better Balance, a new plant-based food brand currently available in Europe and Mexico that launched in the U.S. in 2022 and is headquartered in Dallas.

Gardner was previously co-owner and chef at V-Eats in Trinity Groves, as well as owner and chef at Samson’s Gourmet Hot Dogs from 2013 to 2016, where half of the menu was vegan - catching the eye of celebrities like Erykah Badu and Andre 3000 of Outkast. He also had a successful catering business called Mobile Gourmet that he started in 1997, where he first started serving and adding vegan dishes.

In late 2018, he was featured on the Food Network’s Guy’s Grocery Games, Season 20, episode 1 of the “Clash of the Vegetarians." In 2022, he published his first cookbook of plant-based recipes called Easy Southern Vegan Cookbook and also launched a line of spice mixes called Veganize IT!

Sprinkles' pizzeria spinoff debuts in Dallas, first outside California

Pizzana

Get ready for some celebrated pizza.

Pizza is on with the imminent arrival of Pizzana, the restaurant from the founders of Sprinkles Cupcakes, opening at 3219 Knox St. on November 15.

Pizzana debuted in Los Angeles in 2017, and as a release notes, this is the first location outside California. It stars pizzaiolo Daniele Uditi, who has appeared on Hulu's "Best in Dough" pizza competition series.

They ferment their dough for 48 hours. Toppings blend traditional with Pizzana originals such as Uditi's signature cacio e pepe pizza, which a release claims has been copied by pizza places far and wide. Not in Dallas though! Buck up.

The menu includes pizzas, antipasti, salads, desserts, and vegan options. They're also doing a gluten-free crust.

Much like Shake Shack, they're doing a collaboration with a local: a pizza with ingredients from BBQ restaurant Pecan Lodge featuring brisket, smoked fior di latte, jalapeño, pickled red onion, fontina crema, cilantro, and San Marzano barbecue sauce.

There's also a Dallas-only dessert, an apple crisp featuring Texas-based whiskey brand Herman Marshall is topped with vanilla ice cream, which the release calls creamy. Creamy is definitely preferable in a vanilla ice cream to icy, grainy, or hard.

"Dallas is a very special city and has always been so welcoming to Sprinkles Cupcakes," Candace Nelson says in a statement. "Daniele, Charles, and I are so looking forward to sharing Pizzana with the Dallas community. "Pizzana’s menu will satisfy any carb carving and everything on the menu is worth the indulgence.”

The restaurant seats 45, with banquettes and signature Mediterranean blue colors. Each table features Pizzana's first-of-its-kind pizza towers, custom-crafted for hot pies to be presented and stacked above the surface of the table.

They'll be open lunch and dinner daily, until 10 pm Sunday-Thursday and 11 pm Friday and Saturday.
