A Tex-Mex restaurateur beloved to many Dallas old-timers has opened a new place: Called Eddie's Cocina & Cantina, it's from Eddie Cervantes, and is now open at 5622 Lemmon Ave., in the Lemmonwood Shopping Center at the corner of Inwood Road — in a space with lots of Tex-Mex history.

Most recently, it was home to the short-lived Casa Rosa Tex-Mex, but before that, was forever home to an El Fenix, until it closed in 2020.

Cervantes has a big following among old-time Dallasites who've been fans ever since he opened his famed Tex-Mex watering hole Primo’s Bar & Grill on McKinney Avenue in 1986 — a place where locals, chefs, and celebs would flock to sip on "meltdown margaritas" and chow on chips & queso and stuffed jalapenos.

They followed him to Eddie's Tex-Mex Cocina which he opened at 2018 Greenville Ave. in 2021. (He previously opened E-Bar at 1901 N. Haskell Ave. in 2013, but is no longer associated with that restaurant.)

Now he'll bring his Tex-Mex to a neighborhood — adjacent to Park Cities, Preston Hollow, and the Medical District — that wants it desperately. Especially in that storied location, home to El Fenix for 60 years before it closed in 2020.

Eddie’s Cocina & Cantina has reimagined the former El Fenix with a bright main dining room, plus a cantina bar and private room available for bookings.

"We are serving good quality Tex-Mex food that our customers love and strong margaritas that we have always been known for,” Cervantes says in a release.

One benefit of the new space is that it boasts a larger bar than the Greenville Avenue location — one that can accoommodate a tequila and mezcal tasting menu that's in the works.

It currently has TVs for sports programming, plus a menu that will be familiar to old fans with brisket tacos, sour cream chicken enchiladas, and red fish & shrimp ceviche.
