Weekend Event Planner

Selena Gomez and Polyphonic Spree top best weekend events in Dallas

Alex Bentley
Oct 31, 2013 | 12:00 am

It's Halloween week, which means the slate for this weekend includes several holiday-themed events. But there is plenty of non-spooky stuff going on, including the opening of a new area in downtown Fort Worth, a big festival in Carrollton and the return of a hometown girl who's now one of the biggest stars on the planet.

Below are the best options for your precious free time Thursday through Sunday. Don't like what you see? Lucky for you, we have a much longer list of the city's best events.

Thursday, October 31

Alamo Drafthouse presents Alaween Halloween Carnival
The folks at Alamo Drafthouse love to play dress up on normal weeks, so you can only imagine what Halloween is like for them. They'll have all sorts of fun stuff going on, including trick-or-treating in the theaters, pumpkin carving, a costume contest with prizes and more. For those of age, you can also stay late for a special screening of Halloween.

Avenue Q Halloween Sing-along
Avenue Q has more-or-less become the permanent show in the Theatre Too space at Theatre Three, playing off-and-on there since September 2012. The latest incarnation with a couple of new cast members just started up again, and they'll celebrate Halloween by inviting the audience to dress up as their favorite characters and sing along to their favorite tunes.

Friday, November 1

Sundance Square Plaza grand opening
Sundance Square has been a huge draw for downtown Fort Worth for decades, and it's about to get another big boost with the opening of Sundance Square Plaza, a walkable open space smack dab in the middle of the square featuring fountains, giant umbrellas and entrances to multiple new buildings. They'll celebrate the opening with a variety of performances and other activities Friday through Sunday.

Dallas Black Dance Theatre presents Black on Black 2013
The 2013-2014 season for Dallas Black Dance Theatre continues with Black on Black, an opportunity for the audience to see DBDT's space in the Dallas Arts District, watch intimate and personal performances by the company's dancers and then possibly get on the action themselves at the after-party.

Saturday, November 2

2013 Travel & Adventure Show
The Travel & Adventure Show is kind of a catch-all title for an event that has a bit of everything. Taking place Saturday and Sunday at the Dallas Convention Center, it features everything from animals from SeaWorld to bubble rollers on a big pool to Bachelor host Chris Harrison. It also has loads of travel experts, a culinary theater and a melange of international music performances.

2013 Carrollton Festival at the Switchyard
If you missed your chance for a little '90s nostalgia when Smash Mouth and Sugar Ray came to Allen a few months ago, you can catch them headlining the entertainment at the Carrollton Festival at the Switchyard. The day-long fest in Historic Downtown Carrollton also has food, shopping, arts and crafts, games, rides and more.

2013 North Oak Cliff Music Festival
Anyone who frequents The Kessler for concerts will find more than a few familiar names at this second annual music festival, taking place at Lake Cliff Park. Artists like Jason Eady, The Relatives, Daphne Willis, Seryn, Ruthie Foster and Bob Schneider will all perform, with your usual array of food trucks and kid-friendly activities rounding out the event.

The Polyphonic Spree presents 1st Annual Halloween Hootenanny
The Polyphonic Spree has occasionally broken out a song or two from The Rocky Horror Picture Show at its concerts, but this will be a full-on Rocky Horror fest at Lakewood Theater, complete with costume contest and a post-concert screening of the film. The Spree will also perform some original songs to close out Halloween in style.

Sunday, November 3

2013 Festival of Church Music
Church-goers can get a full day of church music on Sunday by starting off going to their regular service and then ending the day at Meyerson Symphony Center for the Festival of Church Music. 450 singers from 19 churches, accompanied by a brass ensemble, will sing a variety of hymns and anthems, including several with the audience.

Selena Gomez in concert
Grand Prairie native Selena Gomez has accomplished a lot in her 21 years, including starring in her own Disney Channel series and dating Justin Bieber. Although she's been a hot commodity on the music scene for several years with her band The Scene, her 2013 album Stars Dance marks her first official solo effort. She'll bring all of her talent to the table for this concert at American Airlines Center.

Grand Prairie native Selena Gomez will perform at American Airlines Center on November 3.

Dallas founder of Chili's to open new Loop 9 BBQ restaurant in Grand Prairie

Loop 9

Got your sausage right here.

A Dallas famous F&B guy is opening another restaurant. Called Loop 9 BBQ, it's a new BBQ concept featuring prime brisket from Larry Lavine, the founder of Chili's, and it's opening in Grand Prairie in early 2023.

According to a release, it'll be one of the first restaurant to go into EpicCentral, the 172-acre entertainment center off Highway 161 that's home to Grand Prairie Public Safety Building, Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark, The Summit recreation center for adults ages 50+, The Epic, Playgrand Adventures, five lakes, a grand lawn, and boardwalk.

Loop 9 BBQ describes itself as a Texas barbecue restaurant serving prime brisket, pork ribs, pulled pork, and Meyer’s Elgin sausage.

The signature appetizer is “Dirty” Burnt-End Queso, while a full bar will offer fresh lime margaritas, house cocktails, craft beers, and wines.

Sides will include Mexican corn, borracha beans, fried okra, cornbread, and two flavors of fries.

Desserts will be based on recipes by Lavine's wife, Ann, including Chocolate Cream Pie, Coconut Cream Pie, Key Lime Pie, and Banana Cream Pudding. The restaurant will have a separate pie shop selling whole pies to take home.

Lavine has featured her pies at previous restaurants, namely two short-lived taverns he opened 15 years ago, Red's Patio Grill in Plano and Strong's Everyday Tavern in Uptown Dallas.

Since opening is still a few months away, Loop 9 is now offering catering services as a prelude; the menu is online.

This isn't Lavine's first foray into BBQ; in 2014, he helped found Ten 50 BBQ in Richardson.

The release says the restaurant is named for a doomed Loop 9 Dallas-Fort Worth route that would have eased traffic from the future DFW airport. How Dallas, to name a restaurant for a freeway! Grand Prairie now has 161, brimming with projects that include the EpicCentral development that comprises amusement parks, hotels, conference center, and restaurants.

New self-guided walking tour showcases Fort Worth Stockyards’ many Hollywood ties

The Stockyards Hotel is on the tour.

A new self-guided tour showcasing the Fort Worth Stockyards’ many star-studded appearances in cinema throughout the years has debuted in time for the 16th annual Lone Star Film Festival, taking place November 10-12 in the Stockyards for the first time.

Called Stars of the Stockyards, the eight-stop, go-at-your-own pace walking tour guides folks to famous film sites where celebrities have stepped foot in front of Hollywood cameras. Visitors to the Stockyards can access the PDF tour map on their smart phones via QR codes (no app required) posted throughout the district, namely at hotels and tour kiosks.

"The Stockyards is a historic and celebrated destination for many reasons, but one that may be lesser known is its popularity as a filming location for some of our favorite movies and TV series," said Ethan Cartwright, VP of marketing for Stockyards Heritage Development Co.

The tour and corresponding QR codes are a permanent addition to the district, he said.

Stops on the map include the iconic White Elephant Saloon, a hotbed for Hollywood performances including several by legendary actor and martial artist Chuck Norris in the longtime TV series, Walker, Texas Ranger when the watering hole was portrayed as the fictional CD Bar. The White Elephant was also graced by country music superstar Tim McGraw and Academy Award-winning actor Billy Bob Thornton for their appearances in Paramount Plus’ hit series1883.

Also in 1883 and featured on the tour is Hookers Grill, hidden in the less flashy West side of Exchange Ave. The burger shack transformed into a gambling den in the show called The Texas House of Liquor & Sport. It’s the only building in the Stockyards that preserved the façade constructed by 1883’s production team. During operating hours, customers can order at the outdoor burger window and dine at patio tables within the two-story structure.

Cowtown Coliseum is marked on the map for its appearances in the 1983 film Tough Enough, where actor Dennis Quaid played an amateur boxer. It’s also the home of the final rodeo scene in the 1992 movie Pure Country starring country music legend George Strait.

Billy Bob’s Texas, the Stockyards Hotel, and even unassuming historic cattle pens also make the list on the tour, along with notations for the Texas Trail of Fame, which features more than 240 bronze markers honoring contributors for preserving and perpetuating the Western way of life.

Veteran actors Sam Elliot and Robert Duvall, both stars in the megahit TV series Yellowstone, are among the most recent Texas Trail of Fame inductees.

South Dallas food park debuts at Fair Park with new name and vendors

A food park for and by South Dallas is making a comeback. Now called The Sunny South Dallas Food Park, it's debuting at Fair Park on November 13 with a lineup of Black-owned food trucks and trailers, with plentiful options including vegan and non-vegan foods.

Previously known as MLK Food Park, the event first debuted in April 2022 as a month-long pop-up park on 1611 Martin Luther King Blvd. In June, it relocated to Fair Park, where it held court through the end of July.

Now it's rebranded by Do Right By The Streets (DRBTS), its organizer, to highlight its representation of the South Dallas community, paying homage to its nickname, Sunny South Dallas. DRBTS is a Black-owned urban planning and place creation group founded by urban planner Desiree Powell that focuses on land use, zoning, and placemaking in communities of color.

"The name change represents a new chapter of the Food Park's growth as we continue expanding the vision of a permanent safe space at Fair Park," Powell says in a statement.

"The MLK Food Park began as a temporary pop-up park collaboration between TREC (Texas Real Estate Council), Better Block, and DRBTS,” Powell says. "The shared goal was to bring South Dallas residents together to gather in fellowship, all while supporting local Black and Brown-owned food trucks and vendors and providing a space for economic mobility."

Vendors include Dallasized Cookies, The Confectionist Factory, Bri's Bakes, Banomnom Pudding, Candles By Mezique, Smith Spot BBQ, Happy Vegan, Moe's Delights, Royalty Soy Candles, Khristian's Lemonade, Sunshine's Wings & Catfish, Sacred Instruments Jewelry, The Cat Shack, Read with Dr. Wade, and more.

"The food park is way more than bringing a bunch of food trucks and vendors out for a singular event that brings a lot of attention then leaves," DRBTS' website notes. "We're dedicated to building trust through this space that respects the past to build the community South Dallas' Black residents truly deserve."

The schedule for The Sunny South Dallas Food Park will be monthly, with a break in the winter, running from November 2022 to July 2023, on the following Sundays from 12-4 pm:

  • Sunday, November 13
  • Sunday, December 11
  • Sunday, March 26
  • Sunday, April 16
  • Sunday, May 21
  • Sunday, June 18
  • Sunday, July 30

Parking is free at Gate 6/Lot 6 at Robert B. Cullum and MLK Jr. Boulevard.
