    Weekend Event Planner

Country music superstars blaze into 16 best Dallas events this weekend

    Alex Bentley
    May 8, 2025 | 6:00 am

The run of weekends with almost too much to do continues around Dallas, headlined by a big concert with a pre-game party. Other choices include a great art experience, a Smurfs event, an awards show with Country music royalty, four theater productions, a legendary singer in concert, a dance production, a symphony concert, a celebration of military aircraft, a Asian American festival, a visit from a famous foodie, a unique stringed-instrument concert, and an event featuring two very funny comedians.

Below are the best ways to spend your free time this weekend. If you want more options, check out the calendar for an even longer list of the city's best events.

    Thursday, May 8

Dallas Museum of Art presents "Return to Infinity: Yayoi Kusama"
For the first time since 2018, the DMA will install Yayoi Kusama’s All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins, an iteration of the artist’s iconic “Infinity Mirrored Rooms” incorporating one of the artist’s quintessential symbols, the pumpkin. This boundary-pushing experiential work draws on several of Kusama’s characteristic themes, including infinity, the sublime, and obsessive repetition, allowing the viewer to literally become a part of the art. The exhibition will remain on display through January 18, 2026.

    The Smurf Experience
The Smurf Experience is an immersive attraction that lets guests transform into a Smurf with a mission to save the planet from the evil wizard, Gargamel. Traveling through Smurf Village, the Enchanted Forest, and Gargamel’s lair, The Smurf Experience includes scavenger hunts, obstacle courses, virtual reality adventures, meet-and-greets with beloved Smurf characters, and more. The event will continue through at least August 11 at Esports Stadium Arlington.

60th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards
The 60th Academy of Country Music Awards will celebrate the best in Country music. Hosted by Reba McEntire, the milestone show honors six decades of unforgettable performances, iconic artists, and rising stars shaping the genre today. Performers will include Chris Stapleton, Ashley McBryde, Kane Brown, Kelsea Ballerini, Lainey Wilson, Luke Combs, Miranda Lambert, and more. The event takes place at the Ford Center in Frisco.

AT&T Performing Arts Center presents Forbidden Broadway: Merrily We Stole a Song
From Frozen to Phantom to Wicked, Forbidden Broadway is a satirical roast of over 30 Broadway hits featuring outrageous costumes, silly spoofs of the songs you know by heart, and madcap impressions by a stellar cast. A New York sensation for 35 years, a talented quintet of comic chameleons throw out pointed parodies at a dizzying pace. The production will have four performances through Saturday at Wyly Theatre.

Paul Simon in concert: A Quiet Celebration
Legendary singer/songwriter Paul Simon, now 83 years old, will make a rare live appearance after retiring from touring in 2018. One of the few artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice - for his work with Simon & Garfunkel and his solo career - Simon will present the live debut of his 2023 Grammy-nominated album, Seven Psalms, alongside a celebration of his timeless classics. The second of two concerts (the first took place Wednesday) will be at Winspear Opera House.

    Friday, May 9

    Post Malone's Travelin' Tailgate
It's a big enough deal that Post Malone is bringing his F-1 Trillion tour to AT&T Stadium on Friday, where he'll be joined by Jelly Roll and Sierra Ferrell, but it will be preceded by the Travelin’ Tailgate, a free event that's open to anyone, regardless of whether you have a concert ticket or not. Running from 12-6 pm outside the stadium, it will feature live music, food, beer, merch, carnival games, photo opportunities, and tattoos by Posty’s personal tattoo artists.

Theatre Arlington presents The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
15-year-old Christopher has an extraordinary brain: He is exceptional at mathematics but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched, and he distrusts strangers. Now it is seven minutes after midnight, and Christopher stands beside his neighbor’s dead dog, Wellington, who has been speared with a garden fork. Finding himself under suspicion, Christopher is determined to solve the mystery, but his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a thrilling journey that upturns his world. The production runs through May 25 at Theatre Arlington.

    Avant Chamber Ballet presents Masterworks
Masterworks showcases the artistic genius of four renowned choreographers with a live orchestra. It features masterpieces by August Bournonville, the father of Romantic ballet; Christopher Wheeldon, one of the most sought-after choreographers of our time; Paul Mejia, a leader in the modern vision for ballet; and Marius Petipa, the pinnacle of classical ballet. The production will have performances on Friday and Saturday at Moody Performance Hall.

Dallas Symphony Orchestra presents "¡Bailamos! A Night of Latin Music"
Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra will present a night of sultry Latin music, featuring tango classics and ballads. Edna Vázquez will spread her message of light, love and cultural healing. Argentine bandoneón artist Héctor Del Curto will perform music by the iconic Astor Piazzolla and Carlos Gardel, including the famous “Por Una Cabeza.” Argentine master dancers Celina Rotundo and Hugo Patyn will perform the tango alongside the music. There will be three performances through Sunday at Meyerson Symphony Center.

    Pegasus Theatre presents Death/Take:1!
After getting trapped on a cruise liner with Harry and Nigel, Lt. Foster and his friends end up in Egypt. Inside the pyramid the intrepid trio has entered, an action-adventure movie is being shot. The hapless film director, the famous action-adventure star, and his leading lady are being bullied by the all-powerful screenwriter. With tension thick in the air, it isn’t long before someone snaps and someone eats a lead sandwich. Harry, Nigel, and Foster have to solve this nefarious crime before the killer strikes again. The production runs through May 24 at Bath House Cultural Center.

Ochre House Theater presents Moving Creatures
Moving Creatures is a politically charged satire about an evil and intolerable oligarch, Baron Leopold Verdugo, and his four monstrous creations. The Baron is a soured, bloated old goat who lords over a once rich and beautiful region that is now a wasteland due to the Baron’s greediness. The monsters were once beautiful, successful women that fell victim to the Baron’s insatiable desire to kill, destroy, and rebuild in his own image. The production runs through May 24 at Ochre House Theater.

    Saturday, May 10

Commemorative Air Force presents Warbird Weekend
Warbird Weekend takes visitors back in time to see vintage aircraft and vehicles up close. There will be a variety of egendary aircraft on display, along with a vintage car show, and hands-on activities including panels, model airplanes, flight areas, food trucks, and more. The event takes place on Saturday and Sunday at Henry B. Tippie National Aviation Education Center.

City of Garland presents Asian American Heritage Festival
At the City of Garland's 3rd Annual Asian American Heritage Festival, visitors can enjoy cultural performances from countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, and more. Highlights include a World Parade, a lion dance, craft stalls, live performances, and Ube Land, a celebration of all things ube. The event takes place in Downtown Garland.

    Alton Brown Live: Last Bite
Alton Brown comes to town as part of his Last Bite tour. The famed foodist will reflect on his decades in food media, present several of his favorite culinary mega-hacks, and sing some of his funny food songs as part of the culinary variety show. The event takes place at Texas Trust CU Theatre at Grand Prairie.

Hee Yun Kim presents Strings Across the Pacific
Strings Attached Across the Pacific is a concert with a unique ensemble of culturally diverse string instruments, where the two-stringed bowed instruments from the East, the Korean haegeum, and Chinese erhu meet a string quartet from the West. The concert will include the premiere of a 45-minute composition, Calling of the Whales, by composer Hee Yun Kim, which is inspired by the underwater sound of whales and timbral richness of this sextet. The production, part of AT&T Performing Arts Center's Elevator Project, will have performances on Saturday and Sunday at Wyly Theatre.

    Sunday, May 11

Two Funny Mamas: Sherri Shepherd & Kym Whitley
Comedic actresses Sherri Shepherd and Kym Whitley blend their comedic power and chemistry to deliver their award-winning podcast, Two Funny Mamas, that speaks to culture, sisterhood, moms, and working women everywhere. Charli XCX attempts to seize 'The Moment' in new mockumentary

    Charli XCX in The Moment.

There have been plenty of music documentaries and biopics that show how the life of a music star can be a trying one, with fans, record label executives, and hangers-on all wanting a piece of a certain singer or band. Charli XCX knows the pressures as well as anyone thanks to back-to-back hit albums, but instead of addressing her life with a self-aggrandizing promo film, she’s gone the unexpected route with the mockumentary, The Moment.

The singer plays a fictionalized version of herself who’s coming off of “Brat Summer,” a cultural phenomenon that followed the release of her 2024 album, Brat. In addition to a planned tour, she and her team are trying to come up with other ways to capitalize on the moment, ideas that sometimes include her input and sometimes don’t. The one that becomes the driving force of the story is a concert film that will be directed by the in-demand filmmaker Johannes (Alexander Skarsgård).

Even though Charli XCX had already planned out the visuals, props, and other elements of the tour with good friend Celeste (Hailey Gates), Johannes slowly but surely pushes his ideas to be used instead. As that part of her life starts to slip from her grasp, she starts to lose it in general, agreeing to endorse a Brat-themed credit card, taking an ill-advised spa trip to Ibiza, and more.

Written and directed by Aidan Zamiri (who’s directed two Charli XCX music videos) and co-written by Bertie Brandes, the film should in no way, shape, or form be interpreted as giving viewers an accurate idea of who the singer really is. Aside from the presence of well-known actors like Skarsgård and Rosanna Arquette and comedic actors like Kate Berlant and Jamie Demetriou, everything in the film is heightened sufficiently to understand it shouldn’t be taken seriously.

Still, it’s clear that fans of Charli XCX or those who participated in Brat Summer will be more invested in the film than others. Knowing that Rachel Sennott’s cameo likely stems from their friendship following Charli XCX doing the score for Sennott’s film, Bottoms, or that she enjoyed early fame from the inclusion of her song, “Boom Clap,” in “a movie about two kids with cancer,” as her character puts it, adds some depth to the film.

One of the funniest things about the film is the lack of a showcase of Charli XCX’s music. She doesn’t sing a single note in the entire film, and any songs of hers that are heard are incidental to the story. There is, however, a ton of oppressive flashing titles and frenetic imagery during the various transitions in the film. If you are even slightly affected by rapid lights and/or movement, it might be best to avoid the film entirely.

As George Clooney can attest from Jay Kelly, it’s more difficult to play a version of yourself than you might think, and Charli XCX deserves credit for playing into rumors of her “bitchiness” in this film. Upcoming roles in other films will prove whether she’s truly a good actress or not, but she has a presence that serves this movie well. Skarsgård, who seems to be having a moment of his own in the real world, is the clear winner for best supporting actor of the film, scoring in almost every scene he’s in.

The Moment may not be as effective a mockumentary as something like This is Spinal Tap, but it still has enough memorable moments to make it worth seeing for both fans and non-fans alike. If that’s not enough Charli XCX for you, she’s also created the soundtrack for Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights, which will be in theaters on February 13.

    ---

The Moment opens wide in theaters on February 6.
