New cat cafe prowls into this week's 5 most popular Dallas stories

Editor's note: A lot happened this week, so here's your chance to get caught up. Read on for the week's most popular headlines. Looking for the best things to do this weekend? Find that list here.

1. New cat cafe will prowl into East Dallas from kitty rescue group. A well-known Dallas cat rescue organization is expanding its reach with a new cat cafe. Called the Cat Café, it's from nonprofit A Voice for All Paws (AVAP), and will provide a home for rescued cats, a sanctuary for cat lovers to grab a coffee, and a place for abandoned cats to get access to veterinary care.

2. Dallas hot rod king Richard Rawlings is clearing out Gas Monkey Garage. There was a double dose of news about Dallas hot rodder Richard Rawlings this week. First came news that the Fast N' Loud reality show star and owner of Gas Monkey Garage was selling off a slew of classic cars — nearly his entire collection. Then came word that he's gearing up to open another bar-restaurant mega-venue in Dallas-Fort Worth.

3. Dallas designer serves up new sustainable loungewear brand inspired by Juicy Couture. Dallas-born designer Monica Millington is launching a new loungewear brand that, she hopes, will provide an ethical alternative to fast fashion while playing on millennial nostalgia. Called Sette, it's a line of sustainable, unisex loungewear officially launching online Saturday, August 27.

4. Where to drink in Dallas right now: 5 bars with ultra-hot happy hours. Fall has (almost) arrived, and if there's one thing that a change in seasons always brings to mind, it's happy hours. This August edition of Where to Drink rounds up five new candidates with exciting happy hour programs, some with great drink specials, some with food and drink, and one that's really just all about a cheap martini at lunch.

5. Cirque du Soleil's first-ever Christmas show makes Dallas debut for 2022 holidays. 'Twas four months before Christmas and all through Dallas-Fort Worth, holidayeventnews was stirring — and now comes a Cirque. Cirque du Soleil’s inaugural Christmas show, "‘Twas the Night Before…" will make its North Texas debut at Texas Trust CU Theatre in Grand Prairie during the 2022 holiday season.

Dallas architecture firm nabs top floor of cool MCM Meadows Building

You've seen it off US-75.

A Dallas design firm has snagged the top floor of an iconic building: SHM Architects, PLLC, has leased a 12,218-square-foot space at the historic Meadows Building at Energy Square, located at 5646 Milton St., relocating from their offices at 4514 Travis St. in the Knox District.

According to Michael Griffin of Transwestern Real Estate Services, who with Ethan Minter represented the tenant, SHM needed "a space that is both larger and inspiring."

"The penthouse space of the iconic mid-century modern Meadows Building, with massive balconies and a jewel box of glass in every direction, was the perfect solution," Griffin says in a release.

Completed in 1955, the Meadows Building was the first suburban office tower in Dallas and originally served as the headquarters for the General American Oil Company.

It has many wonderful little features such as nice hardware for the door handles and a beautiful terrazzo floor in the lobby.

Energy Square recently underwent a renovation that netted it a 10,000-square-foot fitness center, conference center, tenant lounges, revamped delis, campus park, and outdoor deck, spread out across five buildings that include the Meadows Building.

It was one of nine projects recognized with a Preservation Texas Honor Award in 2021 from Preservation Texas, who applauded the outstanding renovation it received from Glenstar and USAA Real Estate, which included going so far as to source replacement marble from the original quarry. "A lot of love went into saving this midcentury masterpiece,” wrote one of the Honor Award jury members.

It would surely be a gift to work there every day, and the release says that SHM is expanding its workforce. Wonder if they need writers.

The building is also steps away from the Lovers Lane stop on the DART Rail Red Line, perhaps making the idea of public transportation more enticing to the firm's cadre of young architects. Knox, home of their previous office, has no DART Rail stop, see what I'm saying.

SHM Architects, PLLC was founded in 2005 by David Stocker, Mark Hoesterey, and Enrique Montenegro. They also have a satellite studio in Crested Butte, Colorado, which they opened in 2019.

“Ever since the beginning of our firm, we have had our eye on the Meadows Building," says SHM founding Principal David Stocker. "We have great respect for Dallas architect J.N. MacCammon’s and the Meadows family’s vision for the building and the growth of Dallas."

He calls the building "a lovely example of mid-century modernism."

Beachy tiki-styled bar to surf into Downtown Plano, pina coladas in hand

sweetlysteviausa.com

They'll have frozen pina coladas, what else do you need to know.

Surf's up in Plano with a fun new venue coming soon: Called Coco Beach, it's a tiki-themed bar and restaurant diving into historic Downtown Plano, with an opening targeted for December.

It's located at 1032 E. 15th St., in what was most recently a failed location of the Zalat Pizza chain but was at one time the Queen of Hearts magic shop at the corner of Avenue K.

Coco Beach is from Jacqulyn Hrna, an enthusiastic entrepreneur with experience in both the real estate and bar industries, who wanted to open something that celebrates her love for the beach.

"When I saw that building on the corner, I jumped in and said, 'I'm going for my beach bar'," she says. "I'm a beach girl, I was born in California, and my family was from Florida. We go to the beach every year, on the 4th of July — we go to Destin Beach, which forms the centerpiece of a big mural we've put in the restaurant."

The space has a full kitchen so they'll serve food as well as drink.

"My thought process is to start off with a limited menu — a half dozen appetizers, a handful of entrees, some desserts — and then add more items after we're sure we can execute it well," she says.

"For the bar, we'll definitely have frozen drinks including our signature pina colada, the Coco Colada," she says. "We'll also have a draft system, one that includes a mixed drink like mai tais on tap, with the idea to mix it up according to the season."

They'll keep late-night hours, too.

"We'll be open from 11 am-2 am, and eventually try to do breakfast, with early football games," she says. "We're putting in a bunch of 55-inch TVs to show as many games as we can."

The most distinctive decorative element will surely be the two thatched tiki huts they're installing on the front corners of the building, making this bar extra easy to find.

Beyond her beach crush, Coco Beach also serves as a tribute to a bar legend who passed away in 2021.

"In my 20s, I worked for Clark Boeken, a well-known operator, and learned so much about how to run a bar," she says. "He opened many bars in his lifetime, including a bar in San Antonio called Coco Beach — I think he would be honored."

New MiniLuxe mobile nail service brings the popular Dallas salon right to your home

MiniLuxe manicures are now offered to-go.

An acclaimed Dallas-area nail studio is now delivering manis and pedis straight to customers' doors: MiniLuxe has launched a digital platform called MiniLuxe Anywhere for nail services to-go in DFW.

"We are thrilled to be expanding the reach of Miniluxe Anywhere in the Dallas metropolitan area," says Ting Ting Guo, GM Head of MiniLuxe Anywhere. "We hope our new digital platform will better serve the local audience by making nailcare more accessible and convenient, anywhere they are.”

Services offered include:

  • No-Polish, Basic, Signature, and Gel Manicures ($25-$50)
  • No-Polish, Basic, Signature, and Gel Pedicures ($36-$60)
  • Add-ons like callus treatments, French finish, deluxe massage, performance polish, and gel polish removal ($10-$15).

Customers book directly through the MiniLuxe Anywhere portal.

Up to three guests can be booked per appointment — for the same nail designer or multiple designers for an additional fee. (Note that gratuity is not included in the quoted price, and 25 percent will be added automatically after the service, per the website.)

Group bookings for parties and showers can be made by emailing anywhere@miniluxe.com or submitting an event request form.

Currently, the MiniLuxe Anywhere service is available in within 30 miles of the Dallas city limits, and specifically in Plano, Carrollton, and Grapevine, the company says. Appointments can be booked 8 am-8 pm daily.

MiniLuxe currently has physical salon locations and studios in Highland Park, NorthPark Center, The Shops at Legacy, Uptown, and West Village (exact studio locations can be foundhere).

The company says MiniLuxe Anywhere is meant to be an extension of the hygienic, high-quality services they've become known for (using non-toxic nail polishes, for example) — especially in these post-pandemic days, when there's increased awareness of health and safety concerns.

"With consumer safety and nail tech empowerment at the forefront of each salon, MiniLuxe is setting the standard of what every salon experience should be (even from the comfort of your own home!) in an effort to overhaul the nail industry as a whole," the company says in a release. "MiniLuxe combines pioneering clean salon standards, including non-toxic services and products, surgical grade sanitized instruments, no-circulating whirlpool pedicure baths, as well as market-driven standards including prioritization of nail health, safety and hygiene, and an emphasis on fostering nail artist’s creativity and wellness."
