Celebrate historic Dallas houses at Swiss Avenue Mother's Day home tour

CultureMap Create
May 1, 2014 | 10:26 am

The annual Swiss Avenue Historic District Mother’s Day Tour has been one of the city’s most popular events since it began 40 years ago. The event is a tribute to some of East Dallas’ historic homes, and it takes place May 10-11.

This year’s tour showcases eight early 20th century homes, one of which was built in 1914. Dave Perry-Miller & Associates is proud to sponsor one of the homes on the tour, 5421 Swiss Ave., and invites you to join this celebrated event.

In addition to the home tour, guests can enjoy the following:

  • Aldredge House Speaker Series, with topics such as preservation and architecture. Read about the scheduled speakers here. This event is free to the public.
  • Art fair, antique car showcase, live entertainment and children’s play area.
  • Food and beverages from Penne Pomodoro in Savage Park.
  • Mother’s Day brunch (Sunday, 11 am-2 pm). Tickets and reservations are required.

The homes on tour represent various architectural styles, including Beaux-Arts, French Eclectic, Tudor Revival, Jacobethan Revival, Italian Renaissance, Colonial, Arts & Crafts and Prairie School Design. Guests may opt to travel through the tour via air-conditioned mini coaches or horse-drawn carriages at no charge.

The 41st annual Swiss Avenue Historic District Mother’s Day Home Tour takes place Saturday, 10 am-6 pm, and Sunday, noon-6 pm. Ticket are $20 in advance and $25 at the event. To learn more about the event and see a list of homes, visit the home tour website.

Wheel of Fortune Live spins into Dallas-Fort Worth with puzzles, prizes, and celebrity host

Contestants will get a chance to spin the wheel, solve puzzles, and win big prizes.

We’re all subject to the wheel of fortune, but not all get to watch it turn onstage. North Texans are the lucky ones on January 24 January 24, 2023, when “Wheel of Fortune Live” comes to the Texas Trust CU Theatre at Grand Prairie.

The “theatrical experience” is not exactly the same as the long-running game show — since it’s not broadcast — but there are still opportunities to win big prizes.

The Sony Pictures Television-backed stage show is the only official experience outside of the filmed show, and it’s traveling across the country to make sure everyone gets a chance to see it. Apart from the stop in Dallas-Fort Worth, the tour will also stop in Cedar Park near Austin on January 25, and San Antonio on January 26-27.

Although iconic hosts Pat Sajak and Vanna White are sitting this one out, there will be new celebrities carrying the torch.

Antiques Roadshow host Mark L. Walberg and singer Clay Aiken will split hosting duties depending on the date, and it is yet undecided who will host at any of the four Texas shows. The wheel, of course, will be there — or at least a replica. Audience members will be invited to compete for prizes including $10,000 in cash and trips abroad.

Wheel of Fortune (referring to a metaphor hundreds of years old, which compares fate to a wheel that ensures someone will not always be up or down) has been on air since 1975, now encompassing a catalog of several thousands of episodes. Amazingly, the show changes very little from episode to episode, but has kept viewers entertained with endless puzzles. Some younger viewers may vaguely recognize the show or newly engage with it, especially thanks to a new celebrity variation, which has cultural icons like Snoop Dogg making questionable guesses like “baking onions.”

Three contestants face a series of crossword-like word puzzles, which they need to solve by guessing letters as allowed by a buying system. For each turn, they spin the wheel of fortune, which randomly lands on a dollar amount, prize, or penalty.

The touring show is appropriate for all ages, organizers say.

Presale for “Wheel of Fortune Live” ($34.50) in Grand Prairie is open now. General sales open on November 18 at 10 am. Visit wheeloffortunelive.com to see all dates and link to tickets.

New York-style pizzeria with square pies to open in downtown Dallas

Pizza Leila

Pizza Leila does square Sicilian-style pies.

There's a new pizzeria opening in downtown Dallas: Called Pizza Leila, it's a former ghost kitchen making the leap to its own real-deal location at 2111 Flora St. #120, on the retail floor of the Atelier Luxury Apartments.

According to a release, it'll open in January 2023, offering dine-in, takeout, and delivery 7 days a week.

Pizza Leila is part of NL Group, the hospitality group from Tim McEneny, and previously operated out of the kitchen of its sibling Sloane’s Corner, the cosmopolitan restaurant at 2001 Ross Ave. where award-winning chef Ji Kang presides.

Now it shall have its own kitchen from which to serve its signature Sicilian-style pizzas.

The release describes the new space as a modern take on a traditional New York City pizzeria with counter service, minimal seating, and all of the pizzas on display for diners to choose by the slice.

It will feature a patio in front where diners can soak in the downtown Dallas and Aarts District atmosphere.

The menu will include favorite thick-crusted pizzas such as the one topped with spinach and artichoke, and the Butcher topped with various meaty meats, as well as new creations such as a collaborative pizza between Kang and Chef AQ (Jose's) and appetizers like Cacio E Pepe Arinchini, like a mozzarella stick filled with Pecorino, Parmesan, and Mozzarella.

The dough for their crust uses a starter developed two years ago when Pizza Leila first opened. Old starter is good starter.

They'll have a full bar with novel options such as ice-cold nitro negroni on tap, a creation of NL Group Beverage Director Trevor Landry. The release makes a bold claim which cannot be contested here and now, namely that Pizza Leila will be the first pizza restaurant to have a nitro negroni on tap.

In a statement, Kang says he's excited to not only offer their pizza, but also an entire New York-inspired pizzeria experience.

“When we first thought about Pizza Leila, I knew we needed to stand out as something different than what everyone else was doing," he says. "Detroit, Neopolitan, and NY-style pizzas were everywhere, but Sicilian pizzas are just as delicious in their own unique way so I wanted to bring this to the Dallas community that isn’t as familiar with this style of pizza."

“I understand there are a lot of other options for pizza out there, that are maybe more convenient, less expensive, and different styles, but I refuse to skimp on ingredients, quality, and effort it takes to make a good pizza that I hope everyone enjoys," he says.

'Yellowstone' stars premiere season 5 in Fort Worth ahead of filming in North Texas

Taylor Sheridan and Nicole Sheridan at the Yellowstone season 5 premiere in Fort Worth.

On a chilly fall Sunday evening, the cast and crew of Yellowstone descended on Fort Worth for the hit Paramount TV show's long-awaited season 5 premiere.

Stars and supporters of both Yellowstone and its Fort Worth-shot prequel 1883 - including creator Taylor Sheridan and his wife, Nicole - hit the red carpet (okay, technically it was black) at the Fort Worth Stockyards' Hotel Drover before sitting down to a screening at the Downtown Cowtown at the Isis theater on Sunday, November 13.

The premiere-event was a homecoming for Sheridan, an honorary Fort Worthian who attended Pascal High School and lives on a ranch in Weatherford. It also preceded a day of shooting in the small North Texas town of Venus on Tuesday, November 15, WFAA reported.

Sheridan's Yellowstone chronicles the Dutton family of Montana, led by John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner), who controls the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the U.S. Amid shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds and hard-earned respect, the ranch is in constant conflict with those it borders: an expanding town, an Indian reservation and America’s first national park.

Although Yellowstone's biggest star, Costner, was not in Fort Worth for the premiere, other "Duttons" in attendance included Luke Grimes (Kayce Dutton), Kelsey Asbille (Monica Dutton), Brecken Merrill (Tate Dutton), and Kylie Rogers (young Beth Dutton).

After the screening, guests attended a reception at the Barn at the Hotel Drover, where they were met by a Texas Longhorn and three Drovers from the Fort Worth herd. The reception featured Yellowstone-themed “Blue Montana” and “Dutton Ranch” beverages as signature cocktails.

Country singer Hayes Carll entertained, and a unique “Shop the Scenes” experience allowed attendees to simulate living on the Yellowstone ranch.

Guests were able to wander virtual sets and shop authentic products from the shows. Other fun activities included a custom Wrangler Denim Jacket Station, custom luggage tags with “Yellowstone” signature “Y” branding, a 3D photo booth, a boot shiner and “Yellowstone 1883” Reserve wine tasting.

VIP attendees included cast and crew Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty, Wendy Moniz, Jefferson White, Ian Bohen, Denim Richards, Jen Landon, Piper Perabo, Hassie Harrison, John Emmet Tracy, Ethan Lee, Dawn Olivieri, Kai Caster, Kathryn Kelly, Kyle Silverstein, Eric and Sainty Nelson, Dave Annable, Jake Ream, Buck Taylor, Christian Wassana, and directors Stephen Kay and Christina Voros. Additional notable guests included Craig Cavileer, managing Partner of Stockyards Heritage Development Co. and Hotel Drover; Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Paramount Media Networks; David Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios; and Jenny Wood, president of Bosque Ranch.

The event was presented at the conclusion of the 16th annual Lone Star Film Festival, which screened a variety of narrative feature films, documentaries and short films at various destinations in the Fort Worth Stockyards. Two days earlier at the LSFF Gala, Sheridan had received the 2022 Larry McMurtry Award, the festival's highest honor.

The award, presented by the Lone Star Film Festival and the Fort Worth Film Commission, honors native Texans who have made great contributions to the film, television, and creative industries.

In 2023, Sheridan will receive the state's highest honor for achievement in the arts, a Texas Medal of Arts Award.
